3 accidents: 8 dead

Amid Bhugali bihu festivity at least eight persons were killed and 10 others have been injured in three different road mishaps on Tuesday wee hours.
In a shocking mishap, four policemen were killed when the Scorpio vehicle carrying them collided head with a truck in Laluk in the wee hours. Three others have been battling for life in GMCH.
The second mishap took place in Bogionadi where a Tata Mobile vehicle carrying 13 people turned turtle on the road early in the morning where 2 died on the spot while eight others injured have been rushed to the hospital.
In yet another accident 2 people were killed as an Indigo vehicle rammed into a bike in Hajo early in the morning. The bike duo died on the spot.

Police officer held on bribery charge

An anti corruption cell on Tuesday arrested a senior police officer on bribery charges suggesting non stop extortion on traders by a circle of police officers. Identified as Biman Roy, the Boko police station officer in charge was questioned by the vigilance officials in Guwshati before he was arrested acting on the confessional statement of inspector Bokul Chetia who was held on bribery charge a couple of days back.

Was no need of 900 lives for 1971

Amid an aroused controversy over the cut off year to detect and deport the immigrants from Assam, cabinet minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the lives of 900 people could have been spared had the Assam agitators signed the Accord in 1979. Talking to reporters in Guwahati Sarma said,”after 900 people were martyred the Accord should have like would be examined-like words. “With 1971 as base year why the Accord was not signed in 1979. Senior Cong leader dead

Senior Congress leader and former minister Bijit Saikia is dead at the age of 78leaving a pall of gloom in the state’s political scene. Saikia, who was a minister in the Hiteswar Saikia cabinet died at the Down Town Hospital in Guwahati on Tuesday where he was undergoing treatment for a couple of weeks. Many parties, organizations and individuals have condoled Saikia’s death and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members. Senior Congress leaders thronged Rajiv Bhawan where the lifeless leader was brought to pay their last respect. Then the body was taken to his hometown Tezpur to be cremated in presence of his fans.

Youth held for death threat to Akhil

The Dispur police have arrested a youth in Guwahati a couple of days after he in  social media threatened to shoot dead Akhil Gogoi. Identified as Nilotpal Baruah, he was arrested by a team of Dispur police acting on a complaint lodged by KMSS. Police interrogation is in progress and the youth is believed to have confessed it. In his Facebook status, he said that he would riddle the peasant leader with his licensed arms forcing KMSS to move Dispur police.

Anjan Bora freed after interrogation

The Dispur police have freed Anjan Bora after questioning in connection with his recent Facebook status claiming that a BJP lady legislator makes money by indulging in flash trade triggering anger and acrimony across the state. Bora, whom CID arrested on Saturday and released on bail by a local court in Guwahati a couple of hours later, was picked up by a team of Dispur police on Sunday. After questioning him acting on the complaint lodged by the state BJP leadership, the suspended assistant commandant of the Manja-based APBn was allowed to go.

Anjan Bora arrested again

Police on Sunday arrested Anjan Bora again hours after a local court in Guwahati released him on bail. A team of Dispur police on Sunday arrested the suspended deputy commandant of Assam Police Battalion in Karbi Anglong district acting on a complaint lodged against him after he in his Facebook status made derogatory remarks on a lady BJP legislator four days back. A CID team arrested him on Saturday alleging that his Facebook status violated the rules of conduct. But a court of magistrate released him on bail.
