What ails Jorpukhuri!

The much-hyped efforts for preservation of ancient monuments seems to have failed to reach a section of people. A section of these must-see monuments is languishing in dying agony. That too in the heart of Guwahati city. The example may be made of the Ugratara temple and the Jorpukhuri beside it. The things have reached such a paralyzing extent that a circle of conscious citizens in Guwahati has to write to the district authorities for intervention. Here is an excerpt of a letter written to Deputy Commissioner by Dr Satyakam Phukan demanding immediate intervention to preserve the age old temple and twin tanks teeming with turtles.

SFI protests against the UGC

The Assam wing of the Students’ Federation of India(SFI) staged symbolic protestat Dighalipukuripar, Guwahati  on June 21  against the UGC’s recent decision to hold NET once in a year. The students’ organization rued that if the UGC implements its recent decision regarding the NET then a large number of students would loss chance to appear in the exam. Presently, the UGC holds NET twice in a year. Moreover, the UGC has decided to decrease pass percentage of the NET from present 15% to 6%. Bodies condemn Jagun army atrocity

Several civil bodies of the state including the All Asssam Students’ Organisation and Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Catra Parishad condemned the atrocities unleashed by the India Army personnel and other security agencies on the unarmed populace of Jagun in Tinsukia district. A heavily armed joint group of the Paresh Barooah led faction of ULFA and some other banned out-fits of Northeast on January 20 attacked an Assam Rifles convoy of Assam Rifles on NH 153 near Jagun killing three security personnel and injuring two others. Resentment over free textbook

The sudden decision of Assam government to distribute free text books among government aided school students across the state draws resentment from various sections including the All Assam Publishers and Book Sellers Association. Terming the move as disastrous for the book publishers of the state, GiriPad Devchodhury, proprietor of Bani Prakash urged the government to change its order. Dharani Barman passes away

Dharani Barman, one of the trendsetters of modern drama in the state, breathed his last on Saturday at Chamata, Nalbari district. He was 93. The demise of the thespian bereaves cultural fraternity of the state. He was unwell for last few days. Barman, a cultural activist, made tremendous contributions in the field of drama by penning a large number of plays and translating Shakespeare’s immortal creations like Othello, King Lear into Assamese among others. 2 childrens rescued at Tangla railway station

At a time when there have been reports of human trafficking specially women and children from the state to various North Indian states.Two childrens were found abandoned at Tangla railway station on Friday evening. Railway policemen and members of Tangla Police Station Nagrik Committee headed by Ashim Roy rescued the childrens. "We found them in isolated condition. Balen Hazarika passes away

Noted cultural activist, educationist and brother of music maestro Dr. Bhupen Hazarika breathed his last at a private hospital in Guwahati on Saturday.  Late Hazarika, ex-music secretary of Cotton College, was a retired professor of Saint Anthony College, Shillong.
