With her disarming smile simple down to earth and smiling manner the bespectacled Dr. Audrey Cantlie welcomes you with a big smile at her door at Oxford street as if somebody of her own. She has an emotional bond for Assam and the Assamese people.
I still remember the day I met her sometime in September, 1998 at SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies, London) I introduce myself as an Assamese I could see the sparkle in her eyes: said to me "How many Assamese people are in London? I love to meet them". Dr. Audrey Cantlie was born in Shillong in 1923. She spent her six years in Jorhat where her father was Deputy Commissioner. So, in some ways she consider herself a daughter of Assam.
After taking a degree in Sociology at the London School of Economics, she returned to Assam for fieldwork and carried out a study of a village near Jorhat, which was later published under the title of ‘The Assamese’. It is perhaps the only intensive work done in the plains of Assam and I like to think of it as a small contribution to understanding a unique way of life and, more particularly, the religion founded by Sankardeva.
After working on the staff at the London School of Economics. She moved to the School of Oriental and African Studies where I still teach part-time to the present day.
Few weeks after we have organized the 550th Sankar Jayanti at Wembley when we invited her as our chief guest. The speech she delivered about Sankardev was so informative. Since then Dr. Cantlie always shares every Assamese Community function in London. Her guidance and support is very valuable to me at my work in a women oriented matter.
From studying, Sociology at the London School of Economics and to teach at (School of Oriental and African Studies. Her beautiful past as an Assamese is still in her mind. She wrote “The Assamese” dedicated to the memory of her father Sir Keith Cantlie who served 40 years in the state of Assam. How beautifully she expressed the qualities of Assamese people in this book.
Call her a professor, teacher, academician for rest of our Assamese society in London she is just our “Cantlie baidew”
During her stay at Guwahati, we have organised an interactive session with teachers, academicians, journalists and students at Sudmersen Hall, Cotton College on Wednesday 13 February, 2008 at 4:00pm.

I am from BANI MANDIR, a publication house from Assam since 1949. Many people want to buy this book, but due to the price 99% people cannot effort. If I get the publication right I can reprint the in Indian cheaper price and most of the people can buy and can preserve the book. I tried with the author but could not contact. For the second day, the rapid response team are carrying out poultry culling in some parts of Kokrajhar and Dhubri district. The culling is going on in an area of 5 kilometer having as many as 90,000 poultry. Officials here say these will be culled as per the instructions from the Centre. The areas falling in this 5 kilometer area are Kochugaon block in Kokrajhar district, Agomoni block in Dhubri district. As many as 35,000 poultry are there in Dhubri district while Kokrajhar district has 54,000 which are to be culled soon. From Babul Gogoi, New DelhiAssam will get Rs 5011 crore for the year 2008-09. It was finalized here on Monday at a meeting between Planning Commission, Deputy Chairman Shri Montek Singh Ahluwalia and Chief Minister of Assam Tarun Kumar Gogoi.According to official confirmation, the Annual Plan size has been agreed at Rs.5011 crores. It’s a big revelation that the Adivasi militants outfit ANLA funded the AASAA to hold the rally that turn violent in the city’s Beltola area on November 24. The startling revelation came up before the Justice Manisana Singh while the arrested AASAA vice president Rafel Kujur deposed before it recently. According to the Kujur received Rs 20,000 in cash at a Paltanbazar hotel in the evening on November 23. The amount was paid to hold the rally. Notably, the police arrested Kujur alleging nexus with the ANLA. The entire probe is taking a new turn with this revelation. There is no doubt about it.
Tension still prevails in Manderdisa a day after the death of people when Black Widow tribal militants opened indiscriminate fire in the North Cachar village. Three people have been left injured in the strike. The militants set ablaze five houses in the incident. According to information, the militants arrived in the village and woke up villagers who were sleeping and started firing; killing two persons and leaving three injured. The militants further later set on fire five houses. The deceased were were all Adivasi daily wage workers.The reason for the killings was not immediately known.

Aman King is the younger son of Omar Luther King and Roma King. He is incidentally the grandson of Maulana M. Tayyebulla who was a Minister in the Bardoloi Cabinet in the late forties and early fifties and was thereafter unanimously elected (unopposed) to the Upper House of Indian Parliament for two terms (12 years). Aman, a software developer, used to work for a product engineering company in Delhi called GlobalLogic, and is now working for another company called ThoughtWorks in Pune. The King (Junior) claimed his Queen, Arpita (nee Mirani) on January 12, 2008 and the two became one. Aman’s better-half holds a high executive post in Satyam at Pune.
The Asom Gana Parishad will formulate a set of strategies fore the Lok Sabha polls in the light of the panchayat poll results. Disclosing this at a press conference at the party headquarters, Mr Goswami said the result was encouraging and it will help the party ensure victory in the Lok Sabha polls. He maintained that despite rigging the ruling party could not to show expected performance. The president further alleged that the ruling party with the help of a section of vote counting officials ensured the defeat of AGP candidate.
