BTC venture teachers seek government support before Supreme Court

KOKRAJHAR, September 27, 2026 — A meeting of BTC venture teachers was held in Kokrajhar on Saturday amid uncertainty over their future following a recent Supreme Court decision concerning the provincialisation of venture schools.

Following the meeting, the teachers appealed to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Education Minister Ranoj Pegu and BTC Chief Executive Hagrama Mohilary to support their demands.

The teachers urged the Assam Government to file an affidavit before the Supreme Court in support of venture teachers, saying they have been working under difficult conditions without proper salaries and other benefits.

They said some venture teachers had retired without receiving salaries, while others were nearing retirement. The teachers also demanded exemption from the Teachers’ Eligibility Test (TET) requirement and provincialisation of their services.

According to the All BTC Venture Primary Teachers’ Association, there are 631 Lower Primary schools in the BTC area with 1,659 venture teachers. The BTC area also has 217 Middle English schools with 1,705 venture teachers.

Rajen Chauhan and Mukund Madhab Pujari had filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) before the Supreme Court concerning the provincialisation of venture schools.

The Assam Government is scheduled to file its affidavit before the Supreme Court on September 28. The association has urged the government to file the affidavit in support of venture schools and their teachers.

Association spokesperson Nurjamal Sheikh raised the demand while speaking to the media after the meeting. Association president Umesh Chandra Mondal and secretary Chandan Kanta Roy were also present.
