The Central Silk Board (CSB), Muga Eri Silkworm Seed Organisation (MESSO), P-3 Unit, Kowabil, organised a Muga Field Day at Bandarmari, Rainadabri, in the BTC area of Kokrajhar on Tuesday to promote scientific Muga silkworm rearing practices and encourage wider adoption of Muga sericulture among farmers.

The programme saw enthusiastic participation from Muga farmers and local stakeholders, reflecting growing interest in Muga sericulture as a sustainable livelihood activity in the region.

The programme was attended by Daneswar Boro, Assistant Manager, Rainadabri, Department of Sericulture, Adabari, and Nayanjyoti Rabha, Sericulture Demonstrator, Department of Sericulture, Adabari.

During the Field Day, farmers were sensitised to scientific and improved practices in Muga rearing, including proper management of host plants, maintenance of healthy rearing conditions, timely disease and pest management, hygienic practices and other recommended technologies aimed at improving larval survival, cocoon quality and overall productivity.

The interaction also provided an opportunity for farmers to share their field-level experiences, challenges and technical requirements. They were encouraged to make greater use of scientific interventions and improved sericulture technologies to minimise crop losses and enhance the quality and productivity of Muga silk production.

Special emphasis was placed on encouraging new and potential farmers to take up Muga sericulture as a livelihood option, considering the favourable agro-climatic conditions and economic potential of Muga silk in the region. The programme highlighted that systematic adoption of scientific rearing practices could strengthen the Muga silk value chain and contribute to improving farmers' incomes.

Dr Suraksha Chanotra, Scientist-B and Unit In-charge, CSB-MESSO, P-3 Unit, Kowabil, emphasised the importance of continuous technical guidance and farmer-oriented technology dissemination in strengthening Muga sericulture at the grassroots level. She encouraged farmers to adopt recommended scientific practices and maintain regular interaction with technical personnel for timely guidance and support.

The Field Day concluded with an interactive discussion focusing on technology adoption, improved rearing practices and expansion of Muga sericulture among new farmers. The programme served as a platform for technology dissemination, knowledge sharing and strengthening linkages between farmers and technical institutions.

The initiative reflects the continued efforts of CSB-MESSO, P-3 Unit, Kowabil, to promote scientific, sustainable and economically viable Muga sericulture in Kokrajhar and the wider BTC region.
