Freedom fighter called hunger strike supporting peace process

Vetern freedom fighter of Nazira Sub-division Md. Sahidur Rahman informed us that for longer interest of an state and demands urgent peace talk between the Central Govt & ULFA. He along with Miliki Baruah, mother of ULFA chief Proesh Baruah and Mrs. Damayanti Rajkumari, mother of Arabinda Rajkhowa, Chairman of ULFA, will recently take part in hunger strike at Sivasagar. They will urge the Govt to do long term sustainable development programme for speedy and all round development of Assam

Wild elephant found dead in Udalguri

A five years old wild elephant has been found dead at a paddy field in Majuli Basti village under Dimakuchi Police Station in Udalguri district on August 28. According to veterinary sources it had been poisoned at some other places two days back. Nature lovers express serious concern at regular deaths of wild elephants in the district.

Restore security for Mahanta: HC to govt

Black cats will stay with Prafulla Kumar Mahanta. This is Gauhati High Court's instruction. Hearing a petition moved by the former chief minister on Wednesday, a single bench of the court on Thursday as the govenrment to restore the black cats withdrawn a few days back. The court has further instructed the Union home ministry to file an affidavit at any earlier date. Notably, Mahanta moved Gauhati High Court after the government has withdrawn blaks cats he was given a few years back.

In a petition he moved before the court on Wednesday, Mahanta doubted the safety and security of his life and urged the court help him get the security back.

The security personnel deployed to him have been witrhdrawn two months after AGP elected the founder AGP president as the leader of the Opposition in the Assam Assembly.

Bijoy Krishna Handique no more

Bijoy Krishna Handique,  former union minister and Congress leader from Assam died at the Jorhat medical college on Sunday. He was suffering from respiratory ailments and admitted to the hospital Saturday evening. 

The only son of late Krishna Kanta Handique, the famous scholar and founding Vice Chancellor of the Gauhati University, Handique represented the Jorhat Lok Sabha constituency for six consecutive terms since 1991. Handique held several portfolios in the union government. He was also a member of Rajya Sabha from 1980 to 1985.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi who visited the Jorhat Medical College on Saturday has led the state in condoling the death of Handique.
