Journalists’ Forum Assam (JFA) decries the attitude of Delhi government led by Arvind Kejriwal towards the media, where the self-claimed ‘progressive, democratic and honest’ political icon has threatened the media organizations to drag to court for any defamatory news relating to his three months old government.
Once a ‘darling of Indian media’, Kejriwal has slowly showcased his real face to the media fraternity of India, where he continues putting restrictions for the journalists. Questioning the media outlets, which remain critical towards him and his government, of their credibility, Kejriwal often blames them as the ‘agent of opposition’.
In its latest move, the Delhi government has initiated to file defamation cases against the media houses for publishing (broadcasting/beaming) any news which may insult the image of the chief minister, the council of ministers and the government.
In a recent interview, the young chief minister had proudly declared that the voters of Delhi were happy with his government and they would elect again the Aam Aadmi Party government if the polls are held in the national capital, and hence he does not care about the media.
“Everyone knows that any media that goes against the spirit of the constitution can be sued under the respective laws. Hence there is no sense in threatening the media persons repeating those regulations,” said a statement issued by JFA president Rupam Barua and secretary Nava Thakuria.
It also added that the media fraternity should be treated as a trusted partner in the growth and development of the country, rather threatening the medium with ‘public trial’ as declared by Kejriwal, who once emerged as a change maker to the Indian politics.
