Minoti Khaund: The evergreen violinist of 70's musical world of Assam, she is undoubtedly one of the most popular violinist today and can equally be placed among the best. With her disarming smile and charming manner, the bespectacled Minoti Khaund exudes a comfortable air: music, she says takes her closet to divinity and accords her peace and tranquility. It is an invigorating experience which exalts her spirits.

Born in a well to do Phukan paribar of Jorhat. Her father Manik Chandra Phukan and mother Nalini Debi. She was raised in a culturally rich atmosphere. Her maternal grandfather: Bisheswar Sharma, well-known Tea planter and a culturally gharana of Jorhat. Being a connoisseur of the fine arts himself encouraged Minoti and bought her a violin. So, she started to play at a tender age of 10.

Minoti had her early training in violin from Shri Indreswar Sarma of Jorhat, in the music school of late Darpanath Sarma. She performed in several concerts and festivals and the turning point in her life came when she was performing at the All Assam Music Conference in 1972 and violin maestro Pt. V.G.Jog heard her on stage and offered to impart his art to Minoti. Her husband Kabindra Ram Khaund and the daughter in law of Deputy Commissioner Rabindra Ram Khaund a traditional family of Assam supported her and started her apprenticeship under Pt .Jog. Thereafter started the traditional Gururshisya Parampara between Minoti and Padmavibhusahan Pt Jog.

The Rising Talent Conference at Kalamandir Calcutta in 1978 introduced Minoti as a talented artiste. There has been no looking back since then. The Amir Khan Music Conference at Rabindra Sadan Calcutta, Benaras, Burdwan, Cuttack, Bhubaneshwar, Tatanagar, Rabindra Natya Mandir mumbai, India International Center Delhi, Mehta Memorial Hall Allahabad, IIT Festival, Shankardev Kalakshetra Guwahati, National Gallery of Modern Art Mumbai, India Habitat Centre Delhi, Women's International Forum Goa, Madhusudhan Manch Kolkatta etc were the platforms that Minoti performed in and enthralled the audience and press alike. She became the foremost violinist of Assam. She was conferred the title of Sangeet Jyoti.

Minoti started her parallel studies in the field of music and attained Sangeet Nipune from Prayag Sangeet Samitti, Allahabad, in 1986, bagging a gold medal for her Sangeet Visharad. During this period she also got associated with vocalist Pt. A.T, Kanan of the Sangeet Research Academy, Kolkatta and imbibed the "gayaki ang" in her style. She also underwent music studies in the field of raga improvisations and rhythmic patterns of "tala" from sarod maestro and musicologist Pt. Buddhadev Dasgupta.

Sunita Bhuyan is a violinist of the Hindustani style and has carved a niche for herself as an upcoming musician of India. Recepient of the Indira Gandhi Priyadarshini award for Music. She was initiated into musicat a tender age by her mother Minoti Khaund. The mother daughter duo of Minoti and Sunita have performed duets all over the country and abroad, regaling the audience and the press alike with their "jugalbandi". What makes her great is: selection of her tune, her style of presentation and she stried to give a semi-classical touch which has a blend of folk western classical.

Sunita has attained a master's degree in Hindustani Music from Prayag Sangeet Samitte, with a distinction and has also studied advanced music under the apprenticeship of violin maestro Padmabibhushan Late Pt V.G. Jog.

Minoti Khaund, the award winning violin master whose musical career spanning 50 years. She has been awarded the prestigious Silpi Bata this year by Govt. of Assam.

A violin recital by Minoti Khaund and her daughter Sunita Bhuyan are on an exclusive UK tour at the prestigious Nehru Centre (the Cultural wing of Indian High Commission) on 26th June and other British cities: Manchester: Kalapremi mandal, Birmingham and Nottingham organized by Rini Kakati, NRI Co-ordinator for UK.

Also the Glasgow concert is organized by Mrs. Anima Sharma, an active member of Lancashire Hindu Association.

Rhino poaching revisits Kaziranga

One more rhinoceros was killed by poachers in the Kaziranga National Park on Saturday. The poaching took place at Sohola camp in Agoratoli just before the forest guards engaged in a gun battle with poachers who later managed to escape. An encounter followed with the poachers exchanging bullets with the guards but none from the security forces was injured. When the forest personnel searched around, they found the carcass of a rhino with its horn removed. A 303 rifle with ammunition belonging to the poachers was recovered from the area.

UDLF militant killed in Karimganj

Army killed an United Democratic Liberation Front militant caught another in Karimganj district on Saturday. Acting on a tip off, army conducted an operation near Munaphichherra area in the district bordering Mizoram where Mantu Reang was killed and One Bidhu Ram Reang was held. Army recovered one 0.22 rifle, one hand made pistol, ammunition and 3 mobile sets from their possession. Six of them escaped. They were allegedly involved in the kidnapping of Shekhar Deb, a businessman of Cheragi, on September 2.

NGO meets Majhi for upgradation of Employment Exchanges

Unity Education Foundation (UEF) met Labor & Employment Minister Prithibi Majhi recently to press for the modernization of Employment Exchanges in both the rural and urban reaches of Assam. In a memorandum to Majhi, UEF drew his attention to the burgeoning problem of unemployment in the state which it held responsible for anti-social behaviour, increasing insurgency and terrorism in India's NorthEast; Assam in particular. The proposal seeked online registration facilities for the issuance of employment registration, renewal, transfer and user-friendly digitized platforms in Employment Exchanges. Assamese Wikipedia Education Program at GU

An Assamese Wikipedia Education Program is being organised at Gauhati University on October 14 by Center for Internet and Society (CIS) in collaboration with Department of Education, Gauhati University. Microbiology introduced into Handique Girls' College

Handique Girls’ College, Guwahati has become the first college in the state to introduce Microbiology in the three year degree course from the academic session 2012. Dr. O.K. Ragging: 16 expelled, suptd suspended

A strict college in Barpeta district expelled altogether 16 students from its hostel accusing them of ragging the new comers. The incident took place at the Baushi Banikanta Kakati College where the college administration has dismissed three college staff. The hostel superintendent has also been suspended when the allegation was seriously taken up. Barpeta police have already registered a case in the incident. The parents of the victim students lodged the complaint but the hostel superintendent did not acted. According to police, they came to know about the incident through media reports.

Beefed up security in Guwahati for puja

Security has been beefed in Guwahati in the run-up to the Durga Puja next week. Policemen are working at various levels and have carried out risk assessments. Additional forces have been sought to be deployed to deal with the anti-social elements. Raids on anti-social elements have been intensified. The puja organizers and volunteers have been imparted training to deal with any untoward incident. Vigorous operations have also been launched to tackle the problem of illicit liquor and organising committees have been asked to install CCTVs in pandals and take other security measures. Guwahati has over 500 puja committees organise this year.

NFR restores night train services in NE

The Northeast Frontier Railway restored rail services in Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur with the rest of the country on Thursday. Trains started running normally withy additional security forces. The night trains were cancelled for an indefinite period after militants attacked the Agartala Express near Lower Haflong on October 5.

Haldar meets Ranjan in Guwahait jail

Centre’s peace interlocutor PC Halder met National Democratic Front of Bodoland chairman Ranjan Daimary at the in Guwahati Central Jail on Thursday and discussed the proposed peace process with the government. The duo are believed have decided to strike a deal within this year. Notably, NDFB pro-talks faction and led by Gobinda Basumatary, earlier held several rounds of discussions with the state and central government representatives.

Happy Birthday: Gogoi turns 79

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi turned 79. Gogoi, the third time chief minister celebrated his 78th birthday on Thursday at his official residence atop the Koinadhara hills in Guwahati. His party leaders, cabinet colleagues, various parties and organizations wished him since morning on his birthday. Gogoi, flanked by his wife Dolly, cut a huge cake in the presence of several well-wishers. He thanked God and the people of Assam for their blessings and good wishes. Gogoi was born in Rangajan Tea Estate of Jorhat district.
