Minoti Khaund: The evergreen violinist of 70's musical world of Assam, she is undoubtedly one of the most popular violinist today and can equally be placed among the best. With her disarming smile and charming manner, the bespectacled Minoti Khaund exudes a comfortable air: music, she says takes her closet to divinity and accords her peace and tranquility. It is an invigorating experience which exalts her spirits.

Born in a well to do Phukan paribar of Jorhat. Her father Manik Chandra Phukan and mother Nalini Debi. She was raised in a culturally rich atmosphere. Her maternal grandfather: Bisheswar Sharma, well-known Tea planter and a culturally gharana of Jorhat. Being a connoisseur of the fine arts himself encouraged Minoti and bought her a violin. So, she started to play at a tender age of 10.

Minoti had her early training in violin from Shri Indreswar Sarma of Jorhat, in the music school of late Darpanath Sarma. She performed in several concerts and festivals and the turning point in her life came when she was performing at the All Assam Music Conference in 1972 and violin maestro Pt. V.G.Jog heard her on stage and offered to impart his art to Minoti. Her husband Kabindra Ram Khaund and the daughter in law of Deputy Commissioner Rabindra Ram Khaund a traditional family of Assam supported her and started her apprenticeship under Pt .Jog. Thereafter started the traditional Gururshisya Parampara between Minoti and Padmavibhusahan Pt Jog.

The Rising Talent Conference at Kalamandir Calcutta in 1978 introduced Minoti as a talented artiste. There has been no looking back since then. The Amir Khan Music Conference at Rabindra Sadan Calcutta, Benaras, Burdwan, Cuttack, Bhubaneshwar, Tatanagar, Rabindra Natya Mandir mumbai, India International Center Delhi, Mehta Memorial Hall Allahabad, IIT Festival, Shankardev Kalakshetra Guwahati, National Gallery of Modern Art Mumbai, India Habitat Centre Delhi, Women's International Forum Goa, Madhusudhan Manch Kolkatta etc were the platforms that Minoti performed in and enthralled the audience and press alike. She became the foremost violinist of Assam. She was conferred the title of Sangeet Jyoti.

Minoti started her parallel studies in the field of music and attained Sangeet Nipune from Prayag Sangeet Samitti, Allahabad, in 1986, bagging a gold medal for her Sangeet Visharad. During this period she also got associated with vocalist Pt. A.T, Kanan of the Sangeet Research Academy, Kolkatta and imbibed the "gayaki ang" in her style. She also underwent music studies in the field of raga improvisations and rhythmic patterns of "tala" from sarod maestro and musicologist Pt. Buddhadev Dasgupta.

Sunita Bhuyan is a violinist of the Hindustani style and has carved a niche for herself as an upcoming musician of India. Recepient of the Indira Gandhi Priyadarshini award for Music. She was initiated into musicat a tender age by her mother Minoti Khaund. The mother daughter duo of Minoti and Sunita have performed duets all over the country and abroad, regaling the audience and the press alike with their "jugalbandi". What makes her great is: selection of her tune, her style of presentation and she stried to give a semi-classical touch which has a blend of folk western classical.

Sunita has attained a master's degree in Hindustani Music from Prayag Sangeet Samitte, with a distinction and has also studied advanced music under the apprenticeship of violin maestro Padmabibhushan Late Pt V.G. Jog.

Minoti Khaund, the award winning violin master whose musical career spanning 50 years. She has been awarded the prestigious Silpi Bata this year by Govt. of Assam.

A violin recital by Minoti Khaund and her daughter Sunita Bhuyan are on an exclusive UK tour at the prestigious Nehru Centre (the Cultural wing of Indian High Commission) on 26th June and other British cities: Manchester: Kalapremi mandal, Birmingham and Nottingham organized by Rini Kakati, NRI Co-ordinator for UK.

Also the Glasgow concert is organized by Mrs. Anima Sharma, an active member of Lancashire Hindu Association.

Passenger train halts after snags

Causing major inconvenience to over 1,000 people, the Kolongpar passenger train stranded for over two hours after the train developed technical snag in Morigaon district on Thursday. The passenger train developed technical snag at Barahu near the Jagiraod train station at around 8.30am on its way from Nagaon to Guwahati. Auto-truck collision: 1 dead

One person was killed and six were injured when a tempo collided head-on with a truck in Morigaon district on Thursday. The incident took place at Golchepa in the wee hours when the tempo, carrying ten passengers lost control and collided with the truck coming from the opposite direction. Police escape ULFA blast in Sonari

ULFA begins strike in Sivasagar district in the run up to the independence day. A police team had a narrow escape in Charaideo when a powerful bomb exploded in their full view near a body they were going to recover on Thursday. The incident took place in the morning when a team of police from Mothurapur arrive in the Lengubor area to recover the body. As they reached the site, a powerful bomb exploded which was planted at an electric post. Identified as Michel Puty, he was taken away by a group of unidentified miscreants on Wednesday night. The body was spotted on Thursday morning where the bomb exploded. But there was no report of any casualty.

Gas emission sparks fire in Tinsukia

Tinsukia again falls in the deep grip of gas leakage erupting in sparks of fire. In yet another forecast of impending danger of gas leakage, the local in Hilikhaguri have noticed fire a week after they saw high levels of natural gas emissions in their fields. They came to see some sparks of fire in the field on Wednesday night in the evening. The villagers are afraid of devastating gas leakage in the area and even to burn fuel even to cook food in their houses. Same it happened in the nearby Deohall teas estate as well. CBI team to visit BTAD areas

A CBI team will visit the violence-hit BTAD areas on Thursday acting on chief minister’s recommendation for a probe into the riot. Led by CBI Special Director and Joint Secretary (North East) at the Ministry of Home Affairs, Sambhu Singh, the team is set to hold discussions with the Assam Police officials regarding the cases related to the ongoing violence in Kokrajhar, Dhubri, Chirang and Bongaigaon districts which the investigating agency is likely to take over. The state government has recommended 309 cases for investigation but the CBI may not be able to take over all the cases. ABSU office burnt down in Kokrajhar

Fresh tension is simmering in Kokrajhar when unidentified miscreants burnt down the headquarters of the All Bodo Students’ Union on Wednesday evening. The incident took place in the evening demanding that the State government provide adequate supplies including baby food, medicines and text books to inmates of the relief camps.

Ravi Shakar shares BTAD grief

Bus mishap on NH 44: 20 dead

At least 20 people died and several others have been injured when a bus carrying around 40 people slipped into a deep gorge on the National Highway No 44 on Wednesday. The accident took place near Sonapur when the bus was on its way to Agartala from Guwahati on Tuesday wee hours. At least 20 bodies were recovered while the injured have been shifted to the nearest hospital.

Indigenous clash with outsiders: Advani

BJP leader LK Advani came down heavily on Delhi and Dispur for the on going string of violence in BTAD areas and Dhubri. Initiating discussion on the issue in Lok Sabha on Wednesday, the former deputy prime minister said he BJP leader says that the Prime Minister and central government have the most responsibility to resolve the situation in the state. He said that the people of Assam feel that their lands will be seized and they will lose control over them. According to Adsvani, “the central government has more responsibility than even the state government in the matter.” He said that the fundamental problem was one of unchecked illegal immigration.

Gadkari blames immigrants for riot

BJP President Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday demands immediate sealing of the Indo-Bangladesh border to help the state get rid of the trouble mongers. He alleged that the ruling Congress has a tie-up with infiltrators from Bangladesh for its vote-bank politics and that this is the main problem for the recent violence in Assam. Speaking at a discussion on Bodo Hindus - Refugees in their own land, he said that Bangladeshi immigrants are main reason for the violent incidents in Assam. He appealed to all political parties to stand by the people of Indian origin and throw out the illegal migrants.
