The brouhaha concerning Assam’s on-stage Bihu performances have occupied enough columns and television airtime lately. Television channels huddled for hours to arrive at a point wherein speakers including artists and performers attempted to define cultural aesthetics and social behavior drawing up specific comfort zones at the cost of the other, accommodating feministic overtones off and on.
Taking into account the nuisance concerning Assam’s on-stage Bihu performances that few performers and audiences have resorted to under the influence of alcohol, a joint coordination of the city’s Bihu celebration committees have proposed to ban artists and performers from performing on-stage under the influence of alcohol. In so doing the coordination aims to secure the historicity of on-stage Bihu and provide social security to the audiences.
ULFA(I) in a media communiqué Monday have extended its support to the All Guwahati Bihu Coordination Committee for preparing rules and guidelines pertaining to on-stage performances, performer’s personal behavior, dress codes and other contemporary recommendations. The front considers the attempt of the Coordination Committee to have been very timely.
“We are hopeful that with their attempt to preserve the fundamentals of Bihu during on-stage Bihu performances in Assam, they shall be able to salvage Assam’s culture from the vandals,” the release said.
ULFA(I) is “carefully” and “patiently” watching how in the name of on-stage Bihu during Assam’s communal festival certain stage performers and audiences are taking recourse to vandalism.

Investigators from the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) returned to India this week to continue the search for remains of U.S. personnel missing since World War II.
