Shiva strikes gold in Doha

Boxer Shiva Thapa brings no less pride and glory when he strcuk gold at the international boxing champion in Doha on Saturday.

The promising pugalist who hails from Guwahati defeated his rival from Tunisia is the fourth one to have struck gold in 65 kg male category.

His fans and well wishers have come of their homes in the city to celebrate the win.

 Sasastra Seema Bal jawans held a timber smuggler along with a trolley loaded with firewood from 16th battalion based at Ranighuli near Runikata police station in Chirang district on Sunday. The SSB jawans conducted special operations in the area under command of inspector Shyamal Singh managed to seized one power tractor along with trolley loaded of firewood from Indo-Bhutan border and apprehended a timber smuggler. The arrested person was identified as Ranjit Mushahary (26) of Gwtwibari of Chirang district. Cong ready for polls Congress is fully prepared for the assembly polls and it would retain power for the fourth consecutive term. State Congress president Anjan Dutta said it on Sunday when he arrived in the Rajiv Bhawan to attend a crucial party meeting.Dutta said that the dissident won’t be able to topple the Tarun Gogoi government immediately. Dutta further said that APCC would take against the sitting party MLAs if they fail to reply to the showcause notices within the next 15 days.

The Sonapur gangrape accused confessed to have committed the crime after police caught them on Friday night. During police interrogation, one of the duo said that the victim was his classmate and that he and his friend took her on their car to be gangraped at Byrnihat in Meghalaya. They warned her of dire consequences if she disclosed their names and dumped her in Ural villages along the Assam-Meghalaya border early in the morning. Two incidents of landslides heavily disrupted surface communication on the Guwahati-Shillong Road for several hours on Saturday night.       The first incident of landslide took place in Jorabat area forcing many vehicles to remain stranded for several hours on Saturday night.Another landslide incident took place at 13th Mile area where a huge hillock collapsed on the highway. Congress is not worried at all over the exodus of sitting MLAs. Talking to Assam Times on Saturday, senior party leaders said that the ruling has already roped in at least 30 MLAs to help the government survive the impending constitutional crisis.
