AIUDF president Badruddin Ajmal mires in yet another controversy for his alleged misuse of power in Manipur. The Dhubri MP is believed to have been pressurizing Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh and police to arrest a newly wed couple.

Imphal police have been seeking the couple to arrest forcing them to seek High Court’s intervetion to get rid of the impending arrest since they claimed to have married at a local court in Guwahati on April 24 this year.

Shabaz came to Imphal on a business trip on May 20. He started staying with a friend at Khagempalli area. Archiya Habib also arrived in Imphal on May 29.

Thus they have been staying at a friend’s house after informing their family members. The couple further told reporters in Imphal on Sunday that thet they performed `Nikkah as per the Muslim law at Jamiatul Ulama at Babupara in Manipur.

The parents came to meet the couple and agreed to entertain it on June 2 and told them to leave for the home.

She alleged that before leaving for Guwahati a person who accompanied her father threatened to kill the couple on the spot raising doubt of the parents over the real intentions.

Then the father called up MP Badruddin Ajmal seeking help who came to Imphal on June 4 along with his entourage and stayed at Hotel Classic. He had talked over the phone with Archiya promising that nothing would happen to the couple and they would be married by the MP himself.

When some local friends met the MP at Hotel Classic the real intension came to light. It was understood that the girl was wanted back and not the boy.

Then accompanied by a local MLA the MP met the Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh and asked him to help them nab the couple. The Imphal police launched the operation at the instance of the CM.

Habib had moved a domestic case against her parents at the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Imphal West under section 23 of the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005.

The magistrate has passed an interim relief for Archiya and a copy of the order was sent to the OC of Imphal Police Station Shantikumar.

Some lawyers who had submitted the papers on behalf of Archiya was questioned by the inspector and asked of her whereabouts. The lawyer also told him that the couple was at the Paona Bazar office of Human Rights Law Network.

The couple has filed a petition at Manipur High Court to seeking its intervention.
