The centre is closely monitoring the prevailing law and order situation in Manipur. Violence will only compound the problem. Need of the hour is exercising restraint. This was more or less of what a home ministry team said in Manipur on Tuesday when they were on a stock taking visit to the restive north eastern state a month after 9 people died in a orgy of violence after the assembly passed three controversial bills.
The central team headed by Ashok Prasad, told the agitating people to exercise restraint when they talked to them after arriving in Churachandpur in the morning. Here is the excerpt of the speech for the agitating people.
"I can feel their pains and I understand their extend of bereavement. Loss of lives would always be a tragedy more so when it involved those who are plucked away in the prime of their lives. As a brother I share your tears and grief and as a friend I stand by you in your prayers for peace to the departed souls.
These are difficult time that we faced today. A difficult situation that can only be move forward with the help and sympathetic participations of all the stake holders. In fact the relative calm that we produced here today is a tribute to your understanding in the face of great tragedy. I appeal to all of you for continuation of this steering and I particularly the role play by the mothers and ladies of this area who have appeared in the forefront in helping to stabilized and pacified an extremely volatile situations.
I am also grateful to the elders and leaders of this area for their guidance and their directions that they have provided and continue to provide to steer us through this stormy period. I pray to them to continue to guide and advise us as we work toward the speedy resolution of the issue and the avoidance of further tragedy.
After this I'll be interacting with the different stake holders assisting and listening to their words of concerns and I will be taking their valuable suggestions. Some of you have already been interacting with the Central government and I am aware of their concerns and of the commitment of the government in Delhi to join prosperity and peace of this region with the rest of the country. It will be my endeavor to understand the nuances and complexity of the situation so that necessary and effective steps can be initiated at appropriate levels to bring back peace and stability to this area."

The Election Commission is all set to announce its Lok Sabha poll schedule on Wednesday.According to sources, first phase of the general election is slated for April 7. The entire exercise will be conducted in seven phase.The Commission is expected to hold the Lok Sabha phase in Assam in two phases from April 7. The model code of conduct will also come into force from Wednesday.
The Assam government has made a slew of announcement on Tuesday just before the announcement of the poll schedule.These include hike in honorariums for angwanbadi workers, Aasha workers, home guards and village defence parties across the state. These hikes would be effective from April 1, 2014.Moreover, the government has announced 10,000 to each of the self help groups to woo the voters before the Lok Sabha polls.
Three absconding KMSS leaders have moved the court seeking anticipatory bail in connection with the recent self immolation case in Dispur.KMSS leaders namely Kamal Kumar Medhi, Dharya Konwar and Amar Bezbaruah have field petition for anticipatory bail on Tuesday.The court has accepted the bail plea to be heard on Wednesday.Policemen are fanning in the nook and corner of Guwahati in search of the trio two days after Akhil Gogoi along with five of his associates were arrested in this connection.
Three persons were killed and four others have been injured at a tragic road mishap in Karbi Anglong district on Tuesday.The incident took place at Hamren at around 11 in the morning when a truck carrying bamboo met with the mishap. Three persons died on the spot while four injured persons are battling with life in hospital.
Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh along with Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice president Rahul Gandhi will visit Assam in April.According to AICC sources, the trio is expected to address a number of poll rallies across the state in the first week of April.Detail schedule is not available yet.
Congress screening panel met on Tuesday in New Delhi a day before the AICC poll panel meet.Chaired by Union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde, the panel set up to deal with Assam affairs completed screening of poll candidates for most of the Lok Sabha seats.The screening panel is believed to have referred the list of the candidates to the AICC poll panel which is set to approve it on Wednesday.AICC top sources told Assam Times that the list would be announced by the next week.
Jintul Talukdar from BhawanipurChief Minister Tarun Gogoi claimed on Tuesday that Congress would be able to put up a commendable performance in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.Talking to reporters at Bhawanipur, Gogoi said that media can’t stop Congress poll prospect in Assam. “In the past, a section of news papers and TV channels predicted my defeat. But that did not happen. This time also we will win with flying colours,” said the chief minister.

Asom Gana Parishad is holding its steering committee meeting on Tuesday to discuss the list of candidate for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.Chaired by president Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, the meeting at the official residence of Phani Bhushan Chaudury, ia expected to take a final decision on its possible poll alliance with BJP.
Voice of protest against Akhil Gogoi’s arrest seems to have been spreading nook and corner of the state.A huge gathering in Guwahati on Tuesday demanded immediate release of the KMSS president who is under police remand in connection with the recent self immolation of a KMSS activist in Dispur.Noted intellectual Dr Hiren Gogoi slammed the government saying that he was dead opposed to self immolation but in the same breath he said that the government is trying to gag the voice of protest against rampant corruption in public life.
