Animal sacrifice in Durga puja strikes no less shock and anger among many organizations and individuals across the state.
Dozens of buffalos and goats are being sacrificed in many temples in the name of Durga puja from Tuesday. A glimpse of the buffalos, goats, ducks and pigeons being kept for sacrifice at the historic Kamakhya temple premises really shocks the animal lovers. Same it is in many places where the same shocking tradition is allowed in Durga Puja.
“We are helpless. We have been dead opposed to the tradition of animal sacrifice. But the organizers have been refusing to read our campaign. This is a matter of grave concern,” said Shailen Saikia from Sivasagar district who has been campaigning againstanimal sacrifice.
Juli Chutia from Kakojan area in Jorhat told Assam Times that the people must understand the reality. “The things have undergone a sea change now. Everywhere change reigns supreme. But we don’t understand why we are still stick to this tradition. Our minds need to be changed.”
“It would take time to end the tradition of animal sacrifice. If 1000 buffalos and 5000 goats were sacrificed ten years ago, now 50 buffalos and 100 goats are being sacrificed,” said Pranjal Bora from Nagaon.
Bora who is running a non governmental organization told Assam Times over telephone that a massive campaign is the need of the hour againstanimal sacrifice which has yet to take place. “The campaign should have taken place at least 3 months before the commencement of the Durga puja. People from the nook and corner of the state should be aware of it. But I do hope that after 20 years the tradition of animal sacrifice would die down,” he said.

I think it is time to do away with animal sacrifice. It is a barbaric practise.It should stop both for hindu festivals as well as for other religions like for bakrid.

About 150 years back it was a 'religious custom' in India to force widows to get burnt on their husband's funeral pyre (Sati) today we consider it a barbaric tradition. Similarly, years from now, our future generations will look back at us and call us barbaric.
A god who wants the blood of an innocent animal to satisfy him/her cannot be called a god. It can only be a devil/demon. Rather the people who sacrifice animals (be it Bakr Id or Durga Pooja) are devils who sully the name of their god with their crime of killing innocent animals.
The overall flood scene turns more grim with more areas coming under the surging waters on Wednesday. The Brahmaputra and its tributaries have been flowing above the danger level following the incessant rains that lashed the north eastern states for the last couple of days.Water level in the worst effected Lakhimpur district is still surging displacing at least ten lakh people in over 300 villages forcing the authorities to step up relief and rescue operations. A massive operation is going on in Bangaluru in search of more NDFB ultras who are believed to have been hiding in the IT town for the last couple of months.The operation has been intensified after police apprehended 4 NDFB militants who were engaged in a manufacturing factory in the city.Police have inputs suggesting that nearly 40 militants have been hiding in the various southern cutues forcing the authorities to launch the operation.At least 20 of them are engaged in a few factories in the state where police and internal security division in Karnataka have been continuing a number of raids.The militants were believed to have been planning to attack a number of personalities in Karnataka...
Flood waters continue to wreak havoc in Kaziranga, Pobitora and Sibru Saikhowa following the rise in the water levels of the Brahmaputrea.Flood waters in Kaziranga have forced the animals to shift for the high lands. Rhinos, tigers, deers along with others are leaving for the Karbi hills in Kaziranga.The picture is not different from the Dibru Saikhowa. The panic stricken wild horses are sneaking into the human habitats seeking shelter forcing the authorities to ensure tight vigil.

While the Brahmaputra flowed above the danger mark in Nimatighat in Jorhat and Dhubri, its tributaries washed away roads, embankments and bridges in various districts.
BJP will field Manoj Baruah from Pattacharkuchi in the assembly polls early next year.Sources told Assam Times that Baruah agreed to join the saffrone party only after the leadership assured him ticket to contest from the Barpeta district constituency.Baruah resigned as AJYCP president at a special meeting in Guwahati least week.
A team of police from Guwahati is seeking transit remand for four NDFB militants two days after they were apprehended in Bengaluru.Identified as Tonon Basumatri, Sundun Basumatri, Nerson Basumatri and Jibnal Nersary, they would be brought to Guwahati for interrogatin by police and other investigation agencies.According to police, they were hiding in their Laggere house, near Peenya to be raided on Friday. The flood situation threatens to take further grim turn if the weathermen are to be believed. Meteorological centre in Guwahati has predicted more rainfall in the state during the next 48 hours. It would further compound the scene in 10 districts. These flood hit districts have received excess rain during the last ten days. Chirang and Goalpara recorded 312 per cent and 243 per cent excess rain respectively.
