Why don’t stop animal sacrifice

Animal sacrifice in Durga puja strikes no less shock and anger among many organizations and individuals across the state

Dozens of buffalos and goats are being sacrificed in many temples in the name of Durga puja from Tuesday. A glimpse of the buffalos, goats, ducks and pigeons being kept for sacrifice at the historic Kamakhya temple premises really shocks the animal lovers. Same it is in many places where the same shocking tradition is allowed in Durga Puja.

 “We are helpless. We have been dead opposed to the tradition of animal sacrifice. But the organizers have been refusing to read our campaign. This is a matter of grave concern,” said Shailen Saikia from Sivasagar district who has been campaigning against animal sacrifice.

Juli Chutia from Kakojan area in Jorhat told Assam Times that the people must understand the reality. “The things have undergone a sea change now. Everywhere change reigns supreme. But we don’t understand why we are still stick to this tradition. Our minds need to be changed.”

“It would take time to end the tradition of animal sacrifice. If 1000 buffalos and 5000 goats were sacrificed ten years ago, now 50 buffalos and 100 goats are being sacrificed,” said Pranjal Bora from Nagaon.

Bora who is running a non governmental organization told Assam Times over telephone that a massive campaign is the need of the hour against animal sacrifice which has yet to take place. “The campaign should have taken place at least 3 months before the commencement of the Durga puja. People from the nook and corner of the state should be aware of it. But I do hope that after 20 years the tradition of animal sacrifice would die down,” he said.

I think it is time to do away with animal sacrifice. It is a barbaric practise.It should stop both for hindu festivals as well as for other religions like for bakrid.

About 150 years back it was a 'religious custom' in India to force widows to get burnt on their husband's funeral pyre (Sati) today we consider it a barbaric tradition. Similarly, years from now, our future generations will look back at us and call us barbaric. A god who wants the blood of an innocent animal to satisfy him/her cannot be called a god. It can only be a devil/demon. Rather the people who sacrifice animals (be it Bakr Id or Durga Pooja) are devils who sully the name of their god with their crime of killing innocent animals.

Poachers struck at Kaziranga killing this year’s first rhino in the national park on Sunday. The one-horned animal was was killed in the park's Burhapahar range. Forest guards rushed to the spot only after hearing the gunshots. But by then the poachers left the spot.This is the first poaching case in the national park this year. A rhino was killed Dec 31 in the Orang National park in Darrang district. A home guard, who was deployed in the park, was also killed during the incident.

Finally NIA has stepped in. The country’s premier investigation agency registered a criminal case in connection with the recent NDFB-S carnage where at least 80 people lost their lives in Kokrajhar, Sonitpur and Chirang districts. NIA registered four cases after examining the relevant papers handed over by police. The agency took over the case after Union Home Ministry Rajnath Singh agreed to accepted chief minister Tarun Gogoi’s request. 
Sonali Maasor Din, a short story compilation  by Kapil Thakur was inaugurated by Col. Manoranjan Goswami at the ongoing 28th Guwahati Book Fair on Thursday. The book is a compilation of 23 short stories written over time. Present during the book release among others were, author Riju Hazarika, Rajen Sarma, publisher Chandra Prakash.

Forest guards killed two poachers in Kaziranga at an encounter on Thursday a day after a home guard and a full grown rhinoceros were killed in Orang national sanctuary.Thursday’s incident took place in the Bagori Range area of the National Park in the wee hours. Officials told Assam Times that the gun fight erupted when forest guards were searching a group of five poachers who were looking for rhino to strike. Two died on the spot. But three others were believed to have escaped.   
Normalcy is back to Kokrajhar, Sonitpur, Chirang and Udalguri district a week after the Adivasi carnage and incidents of retaliatory attacks. Official sources told Assam Times that refugees in large number in the trouble torn districts start leaving for their homes.As on Wednesday, the number of refugees have decreased to 2.7 lakhs. Altogether 2,70,370 persons have yet to leave 91 relief camps in Kokrajhar, Sonitpur, Chirang and Udalguri districts. More refugees are expected to leave the camps on Thursday. Poachers have killed a rhinoceros and a forest guard at an encounter at the Rajiv Gandhi national park on Wednesday. The encounter took place early in the morning where four poachers faced the forest guard after they killed a full grown rhino.Identified as Sushil Seal, he was a home guard who was killed during the cross fire between the poachers and the forest guard.   A Mk 1 .303 rifle, one pistol and cartridges have also been recovered from the spot.
Himachal Pradesh thrashed Assam riding piggyback on pacer Rishi Dhawan wonderful show in the Ranji Trophy cricket match on the fourth and final day on Wednesday.The pacer grabbed five wickets to help Himachal Pradesh crush Assam by 133 runs. B G Verghese is no more. The award winning author and veteran journalist died at his own residence in Gurgaon on Tuesday evening. He was 87. The relentless crusader for the underprivileged is a famous figure for Assam. He is known for his immense contribution for the entire north eastern region. Various organizations and individuals have condoled his death in Assam. His body would be cremated at the Lodi Road Crematorium on Thursday.
