Animal sacrifice in Durga puja strikes no less shock and anger among many organizations and individuals across the state.
Dozens of buffalos and goats are being sacrificed in many temples in the name of Durga puja from Tuesday. A glimpse of the buffalos, goats, ducks and pigeons being kept for sacrifice at the historic Kamakhya temple premises really shocks the animal lovers. Same it is in many places where the same shocking tradition is allowed in Durga Puja.
“We are helpless. We have been dead opposed to the tradition of animal sacrifice. But the organizers have been refusing to read our campaign. This is a matter of grave concern,” said Shailen Saikia from Sivasagar district who has been campaigning againstanimal sacrifice.
Juli Chutia from Kakojan area in Jorhat told Assam Times that the people must understand the reality. “The things have undergone a sea change now. Everywhere change reigns supreme. But we don’t understand why we are still stick to this tradition. Our minds need to be changed.”
“It would take time to end the tradition of animal sacrifice. If 1000 buffalos and 5000 goats were sacrificed ten years ago, now 50 buffalos and 100 goats are being sacrificed,” said Pranjal Bora from Nagaon.
Bora who is running a non governmental organization told Assam Times over telephone that a massive campaign is the need of the hour againstanimal sacrifice which has yet to take place. “The campaign should have taken place at least 3 months before the commencement of the Durga puja. People from the nook and corner of the state should be aware of it. But I do hope that after 20 years the tradition of animal sacrifice would die down,” he said.

I think it is time to do away with animal sacrifice. It is a barbaric practise.It should stop both for hindu festivals as well as for other religions like for bakrid.

About 150 years back it was a 'religious custom' in India to force widows to get burnt on their husband's funeral pyre (Sati) today we consider it a barbaric tradition. Similarly, years from now, our future generations will look back at us and call us barbaric.
A god who wants the blood of an innocent animal to satisfy him/her cannot be called a god. It can only be a devil/demon. Rather the people who sacrifice animals (be it Bakr Id or Durga Pooja) are devils who sully the name of their god with their crime of killing innocent animals.

In a bizarre incident, over 35 people have been undergoing treatment after they consumed botched gram in Sonitpur district on Tuesday. The incident took place in Dhekiajuli where the grams were served at a religious function as Prasad. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi ordered probe into the LPG pipeline blast that killed four people in Sivasagar district on Monday. In a statement, Gogoi said that the inquiry would help ascertain reasons for the explosion and find out if there were any lapses on the part of the company. After a brief lull, poachers struck Kaziranga again two days before the visit of the Union Forest and Environment minister Prakash Javadekar. The one horned was killed by poachers in the wee hours on Tuesday in the world heritage site. The carcass was spotted in the morning by forest personnel. The Oil India Limited feels the heat of the Singijan incident where four people died and four others have been battling for life. Local residents told Assam Times that a routine check up on the high powered gas pipeline could have averted the explosion. But that was not done. Prafulla Das, a local resident alleged it an example of sheer negligence of the OIL authority which was why, the explosion took place because of technical fault. “If there was any technical fault, it could have been checked and properly repaired. RHISHAV GOGOI, MORANHAT: The death toll in the Moranhat OIL gas pipeline explosion has gone up to three with the death of one more person on Monday. The fourth one death took place where the injured was rushed to the Assam Medical College in Dibrugarh after the incident. Three others are still battling with life at the AMCH. Earlier, Basanta Sarma and his wife Paras Sarma succumbed to their injuries in the hospital. Their two children Akash and Hemanta received 99 per cent burn injuries. Finally, the Assam police have brought back 40 children from Maharashtra nearly a month after they were rescued in an industry. A team of CID arrived in Maharashtra Sunday and left for Guwahati on Monday with the children of whom 36 are girls. They were brought to the outside state a couple of months ago by a racket of child traffickers to be deployed at a fishery industry. RHISHAV GOGOI, MORANHAT: At least three people died and over 30 others sustained critical injury when an Oil India Limited-owned gas pipeline exploded in Moran along the Sivasagar-Dibrugarh inter district border on Monday. The incident, which took place under mysterious circumstances, took place at noon leaving a massive fire in the area. Over 50 houses were reduced to ashes within an hour. Twenty fire tenders from Dibrugarh and Sivasagar have been trying to bring the situation under control. Oil India Limited authorities told Assam Times that the reason is yet to be known.
