Animal sacrifice in Durga puja strikes no less shock and anger among many organizations and individuals across the state.
Dozens of buffalos and goats are being sacrificed in many temples in the name of Durga puja from Tuesday. A glimpse of the buffalos, goats, ducks and pigeons being kept for sacrifice at the historic Kamakhya temple premises really shocks the animal lovers. Same it is in many places where the same shocking tradition is allowed in Durga Puja.
“We are helpless. We have been dead opposed to the tradition of animal sacrifice. But the organizers have been refusing to read our campaign. This is a matter of grave concern,” said Shailen Saikia from Sivasagar district who has been campaigning againstanimal sacrifice.
Juli Chutia from Kakojan area in Jorhat told Assam Times that the people must understand the reality. “The things have undergone a sea change now. Everywhere change reigns supreme. But we don’t understand why we are still stick to this tradition. Our minds need to be changed.”
“It would take time to end the tradition of animal sacrifice. If 1000 buffalos and 5000 goats were sacrificed ten years ago, now 50 buffalos and 100 goats are being sacrificed,” said Pranjal Bora from Nagaon.
Bora who is running a non governmental organization told Assam Times over telephone that a massive campaign is the need of the hour againstanimal sacrifice which has yet to take place. “The campaign should have taken place at least 3 months before the commencement of the Durga puja. People from the nook and corner of the state should be aware of it. But I do hope that after 20 years the tradition of animal sacrifice would die down,” he said.

I think it is time to do away with animal sacrifice. It is a barbaric practise.It should stop both for hindu festivals as well as for other religions like for bakrid.

About 150 years back it was a 'religious custom' in India to force widows to get burnt on their husband's funeral pyre (Sati) today we consider it a barbaric tradition. Similarly, years from now, our future generations will look back at us and call us barbaric.
A god who wants the blood of an innocent animal to satisfy him/her cannot be called a god. It can only be a devil/demon. Rather the people who sacrifice animals (be it Bakr Id or Durga Pooja) are devils who sully the name of their god with their crime of killing innocent animals.

In a bizarre incident, an unidentified youth shot dead a school teacher inside a classroom during a teachers' training programme in Karbi Anglong district on Thursday. The incident took place in Diphu where the gunmen shot dead Sambhu Prasad Singh, a teacher in Diphu Adarsha Hindi School when he was attending a training session at the Basic Training School for TET teachers in the district. A special Highway Patrol unit of the Assam Police is coming up to deal with accidents and crimes on National Highways. Official sources told Assam Times that the decision got chief minister’s nod at a meeting between Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi with Assam DGP Khagen Sarma. The DGP said that the meeting that the accident prone areas have been identified and highway patrolling would be focused on these areas. The overall flood situation remains unchanged on Thursday forcing the district administration to expedite relief and rescue operation. More and more areas have come under surging waters of the overflowing Brahmaputra and Demow rivers. According to official sources, the flood waters have affected 11, 471 people from 44 villages in Dhemaji and Lakhimpur districts. The worst-hit areas in Dhemaji district include Dhemaji, Jonai, Sisiborgaon where relief and rescue operations are in progress.

The drive to evict the illegal settlers in Guwahati seems to have mired in more controversy with the death of one more woman just before demolishing her hut on Wednesday. Identified as Pokhila Begum, the resident of Silsako area died at 11on Wednesday night hours after her hut was demolished during the eviction drive. Family members told Assam Times that the heart patient fell flat just before the arrival of the eviction team. Local residents failed to rushed her to the hospital after the eviction tem demolished the bamboo bridge.This is the second death during the on going drive to clear the wetlands in Guwahati.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that the eviction drive would not halt until and unless the illegal settlers are not evicted at all. Talking to reporters on Wednesday, Gogoi said that not even a single illegal settlers would be spared. He made it plain and simple that the entire drive against the rampant encroachment in the wetlands and hill tops would be carried out as per the law. District administration officials told Assam Times that altogether 46 pucca and huts were demolished apart from 21 temples ad mosque and 35 boundary walls to clear 14 bighas of land.
The ongoing drive to clear the encroached wetlands is likely to touch several high rise buildings in Guwahati in a day or two. According to sources, if this drive is allowed to continue a 17-storied building owned by Himatsingka Group may be demolished at Pathorquarry.
