Idol immersion to complete by noon

The Durga puja din and bustle have died down when the idols of the goddess were immersed on Friday. The immersion started from Thursday afternoon across the state. But all committees will complete the immersion process only on Friday. 

In Guwahati also, at least 100 puja committees immersed the idols in three places on the river Brahmaputra which took place till midnight. Others in the premier north eastern city are preparing to immerse the idols by 12 noon at the initiatives of the district administration. 

People thronged in thousands at Kachari Ghat, Pandu Ghat and Noonmati to see the immersion from early in the morning.

DIBRUGARH: KMSS leaders and workers have started gathering in front of the Dibrugarh Central Jail from early in the morning to catch a glimpse of Akhil Gogoi who is likely to get bail on Thursday. KMSS workers, mostly, from Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Tinsukia, Jorhat, Sivasagar and Golaghat have arrived in the town to see their leader who was sent to jail under NSA. All they hoped that the Gauhati High Court would grant bail to Gogoi to help help him walk out of the jail. The High court is clearing the verdict at 10.30 in the morning. GUWAHATI: A special CBI court in Guwahati on Wednesday remanded Rajesh Dhawan to two days CBI custody who was arrested on Tuesday night. An eleven member CBI team has been interrogating the principal in connection with the bribery allegations against him. He would be produced before the court on Thursday. On Wednesday, acting on an allegation by a contractor a,CBI team laid a trap where he was found to have accepted graft caught red handed.
DIBRUGARH: A local court in Dibrugarh disallowed police to arrest Akhil Gogoi in connection with a case pending against the KMSS leader in Dudhnoi. A team of Goalpara police on Wednesday moved the additional chief judicial magistrate in Dibrugarh seeking permission to get Gogoi in their custody citing a case in Dudhnoi police station. But the court rejected the plea a day before the Gauhati High Court's ruling on his bail petition. The high court is clearing its ruling on Gogoi's bail petition on Thursday morning. Dibrugarh police arrested Gogoi under NSA after he openly urged the people at a meeting to be prepared for an armed struggle.
GUWAHATI: ULFA Commander in Chief Paresh Baruah deeply condoled the sudden death of Mukul Mahanta on Wednesday. Talking to a section of media, the military head of the rebel outfit fighting for an independent Assam said both they met a couple of times a road. Baruah heaped praise on Mahanta and his independent mindset and prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul. ULFA in 2005 set up the peoples consultative group to broker peace with the Centre where Mahanta was one of the members. He also participated in the first round of peace talk between PCG and Centre. Mahanta died a silent death at his Guwahati resident on Wednesday at the age of 92.
GUWAHATI:The Gauhati High Court on Wednesday reserved its ruling on Akhil Gogoi's bail petition. The ruling is expected at 10.30 in the morning on Thursday. In yet another development Dudhnoi police on Wednesday moved Dibrugarh Chief Judicial Magistrate seeking the KMSS leader in their custody in connection with a case pending against him. Even if the High Court grants bail for Gogoi who was arrested under NSA, the KMSS adviser is unlikely to come under the open sky on Thursday.

GUWAHATI:Eminent engineer and social activist Mukul Mahanta passed away at his Guwahati residence on Wednesday. Mahanta was 80 who suddenly died in the wee hours. Mahanta, an engineer by profession was known for his innovation outside the nation. He was one of the members in the Peoples' Consultative Group set up by ULFA to broker peace with the government. Many organizations and individuals have deeply condoled his death and prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul.
GOLAGHAT:Normal life remains paralyzed in Golaghat in view of the 12 hour district bandh on Wednesday in protest against the police excess on a group of protestors in the town on Tuesday. Roads in the upper Assam district remained deserted from 6 in the morning as six organizations have enforced the bandh call.
