Girls duo win Daring Debates

After receiving an overwhelming response and thought-provoking views from the students of Kolkata and Goa, the third leg of Daring Debates took place in Guwahati on December 11, 2015 in Guwahati Press Club organised by Assam Times Foundation.

The motion of the debate ‘Can Civil Society Advance Social Change” was rigorously debated between the participants from renowned colleges like Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Cotton College, Tezpur University, Handique Girls College, College of Veterinary Sciences and others.

Pragya Bhattacharjee from Gauhati Medical College and Monami Bhuyan from Assam Engineering College emerged as the city winners.

The stimulating debate competition was judged by three eminent professors and debaters, namely Dr Akhil Ranjan Dutta & Dr Rajib Handique from Gauhati University, and Dr Archana Sarma from Handique Girls College. Prof. Dilip Kumar Barua chaired the event.

Being curated by the Television for the Environment (tve), Daring Debates aims to bring students from different strata in the discourse of civil society, and create space for meaningful conversations. The next leg of Daring Debates will take place in Mumbai followed by Delhi.

This initiative is positioned as the lead up to the first edition of Difficult Dialogues, an independent, non-partisan forum for discussing critical issues concerning the lives of billions in South Asia. The winning participants from Daring Debates Guwahati edition will travel to Goa to battle once again for the finale with winners from other cities at Difficult Dialogues to be held at the International Centre of Goa on January 30, 2016. Difficult Dialogues is curated by the South Asia Centre, London School of Economics (LSE) and tve, featuring senior administrators, experts and scholars from various sectors including banking, finance, infrastructure and civil society.
