Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president and MP Gaurav Gogoi on Sunday launched a sharp counter-offensive against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, calling the much-hyped SIT report a “super flop” and accusing the CM of staging six months of political drama to divert attention from land and corruption allegations.
Addressing a packed press conference at Rajiv Bhawan, Gogoi said the Chief Minister had kept the SIT report for six months, only to unveil it through a “manufactured spectacle” involving national media, which ultimately failed to produce a single piece of evidence against him. “He swung a mace in the air, but there was nothing in his hands,” Gogoi said.
Flanked by MPs Pradyut Bordoloi and Rakibul Hussain, Gogoi answered questions for hours, rejecting allegations of links to Pakistan and threats to national security. He clarified that his 2013 visit to Pakistan was legal, known to the Central Government, and related to his wife’s international NGO assignment—facts, he said, already disclosed to authorities, including the Modi government.
Strongly condemning the Chief Minister for dragging his minor children into the political attack, Gogoi warned of possible legal action under child protection laws. “Attack me, not my children,” he said, adding that communal politics and attempts to divide Assam would not be tolerated.
Gogoi also questioned why the SIT never summoned him and why the report, if so serious, was neither acted upon nor sent to the Centre for six months. He alleged that the controversy was meant to deflect attention from large landholdings linked to the Chief Minister’s family and major corporate groups.
Raising the political temperature further, Gogoi released a photograph of Himanta Biswa Sarma with a Bangladeshi cleric and challenged the CM to explain his own foreign links. He accused the Chief Minister of “opportunistic religious posturing” and selective outrage.
Former APCC president Bhupen Kumar Bora termed Gogoi’s press conference an “Anti-Ballistic Missile,” claiming it neutralised the CM’s allegations within 24 hours and marked the real beginning of the 2026 Assembly election battle.
As Gogoi put it, “I have placed everything before the people of Assam. They will decide who stands for principles—and who survives on tricks.”
