Journalists’ Forum Assam (JFA) strongly condemns the murder of a senior journalist based in Junagadh of Gujarat and asked the authority to nab the perpetrators and deliver justice to the victim family.
The forum expressed shocks that the miscreants had entered to the bureau office of Gujarati newspaper 'Jai Hind', where Kishore Dave was working on Monday night and stabbed him to death. Dave, 53, was reportedly alone at the bureau office of the Rajkot based newspaper at that moment and he died on the spot. There was no security camera in the one-room office, where an office assistantfound Dave’s body lying on the floor.
“We have lost now four journalists this year (nine since Jan 2015). How may scribes have to die to compel the Union government to formulate a national action plan for safeguarding the media persons across the country,” said a statement issued by JFA president Rupam Barua and secretary Nava Thakuria.
The first incident of journalist murder this year took place in Uttar Pradesh, Tarun Mishra of Hindi daily ‘Jan Sandesh Times’ was shot dead on 13 February. The second casualty was reported from Jharkhand, where a local TV news reporter named Indradev Yadav of Taaza News was shot dead on 12 May. The third news of journalist murder broke from Bihar, where unidentified gunmen shot Rajdeo Ranjan of ‘Hindustan’ to death on 13 May.
India lost five journalists namely Jagendra Singh from Uttar Pradesh, Sandeep Kothari (Madhya Pradesh), Raghavendra Dube (Maharashtra), Hemant Yadav (Uttar Pradesh) and Mithilesh Pandey (Bihar) to assailants last year. Shockingly, no one has been convicted in all these cases.
The Gauhati Press Club has urged State Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma as well as the Health Department to provide COVID-19 vaccines to all journalists irrespective of their ages due to the deterioration of the pandemic situation . Creating more fear among the COVID-19 panic-stricken people, an earthquake measuring 6.4 magnitude on Richter Scale shook Assam and some parts of the NE India today morning. The tremor was felt at 7.52am followed by atleast two aftershocks.
No major loss is reported so far. As per the National Center for Seismology under the Ministry of Earthscience, the magnitude of the earthquake was 6.4 on Richter Scale. “It was really a big”, said Dr. Geeta Dutta, in her facebook post. The epicenter of the massive quake was in the Sonitpur district,Assam at the depth of 10 km.

Security forces have rescued two abducted ONGC officials from Nagaland last night. Sources revealed that the officials were rescued in a joint operation carried out by the Indian Army and Assam Rifles in a populas area of the Mon district. The outlawed ULFA(I) has kidnapped three ONGC officials from the Lakuwa rig. Among the three two were rescued, security forces claimed. The rescued officials are identified as Alakesh Saikia and Moni Mohan Gogoi. Security Forces also recovered an AK 47 rifle during the operation. They keep the operation to rescue the other abducted.

Amidst the Coronavirus scare, a group of armed people has, reportedly, abducted three ONGC officials from its oil rig in Lakuwa, Sivasagar last night. As per reports, the abducted have been identified as Ritul Saikia, Titabor, Mohini Mohan Gogoi, Sivasagar and Alakesh Saikia of Jorhat. After receiving the information, the police have launched investigation.
Mentionable is that the ULFA(I) abducted two officials of an oil company a few months earlier and released them just a few days ago.
Former Chief Minister of Assam and senior Congress leader Dr. Bhumidhar Barman is no more. He was 91. The octogenarian political leader passed away today evening after a brief illness. He was also former health minister during the chief ministership of late Hiteswar Saikia from 1991 to 1996. The Centre is likely to restore the employees' Dearness Allowances(DA) effective from July, this year. The government had decided to not dole out the Allowances after the onslaught of the new coronavirus and the subsequent prolonged lock-down imposed to contain the meance in the country However, as its earlier decision the government, reportedly, mulled to restore the DA, which would benefit lakhs of its empolyees.
