A novel on conservation movement, penned by Pankaj Govinda Medhi, was released at Guwahati Press Club on Sunday afternoon. Titled ‘Charai Chuburi’, the novel in Assamese elaborates a distinctive part of the movement to preserve the forest & wildlife across Assam.
Published Banalata, Dibrugarh, the book was officially released by Phanindra Kumar Devchoudhury, editor of Niyamiya Barta, award winning author Bipul Deuri, conservation personality Soumyadeep Dutta and journalist Nava Thakuria. The program was moderated by Manjit Rajkhowa, who designed the cover of the novel.
Security forces claimed to have killed 2 dreaded Karbi Peoples Liberation Tiger insurgents at an encounter in Karbi Anglong district on Saturday.The encounter took place in the morning when police and army launched a counter offensive against the Karbi militants Rongtaru. Power tariff will hike which generates statewide protest on Saturday a day after the Assam Electricity Regulatory Commission approved it.The hike to be enforced from December 1 is an average 13.1 per cent. According to the AERC, the increase in the tariff for different consumer categories ranges from around 7 per cent to 18 per cent. The consumers have been paying a fuel and power purchase price adjustment (FPPPA) charge of Rs 0.36 from July.The domestic consumers will have to pay an additional amount at the rate of Rs 0.31 to Rs 0.74 per unit, depending on the rate of consumption. The Central Bureau of Investigation steps up the probe into the Saradha scam where a circle of powerful political leaders is involved.The country’s premier investigation agency probing the scam is all set to quiz former minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma and Anjan Dutta.The duo received summons from to appear before the SIT on November 24 at its Salt Lake based office. CBI earlier questioned Dutta in this connection.CBI on August 28 conducted raid at the residence of Dutta in Guwahati apart from Dr Sarma’s residence and Newslive office owned by his wife. Dispur on Friday came all out against New Delhi alleging lack of interest to give the road sector a fresh lease of life. The Calcutta High Court on Friday refused to grant bail for Sadananda Gogoi whom CBI arrested in September in connection with Saradha scam. A division bench of the High Court straightly rejected the bail petition when it came up for hearing on Friday.Gogoi’s counsel moved the plea a couple of days back after the Alipore additional judicial magistrate rejected the bail plea acting on CBI’s request that bail for Gogoi would hamper the probe into the multi crore scam.This has forced Gogoi’s counsel to challenge the lower court’s order before the high court. Security forces are fanning in the nook and corner of Chamdang Tea garden area in search of the militants who exploded a powerful grenade in the wee hours. Immediately after the explosion police and CRPF jawans arrived in the spot and codoned off the entire area for search opertion. The grenade was exploded to terrorise the businessman who was beleived to have received extortion notices along with many other businessmen. The explosion took place in Chamdang tea garden area in the wee hours when the suspected militants lobbed the grenade at the residence of businessman Mahabir Agarwalla.
