Stress on skill in horticulture
The country is caught in a grim crisis of skilled workers where 2.3% of the workforce has undergone formal skill training as compared to 68% in the UK, 75% in Germany, 52% in USA, 80% in Japan and 96% in South Korea. Need of the hour is a slew of steps for skill development in the vital sector like agriculture and horticulture.
This was more or less of what the speakers said opening a skill development training in Khanapara joinly organized by Assam Small Farmers Agribusiness Consortium, Assam Agriculture University, Kristi Vigyan Kendra and department of horticulture and floriculture on Monday.
Speakers after speakers agreed that large sections of the educated workforce have little or no job skills, making them largely unemployable.
In his opening speech assistant director for agriculture Pritam Baruah laid stress on skill development on hotticulture sector among the unemployed youths of Assam.
Sarat Saikia, Chief Scientist,Horticultural Research Station, AAU; Dr.Dhiren Kalita, Programme Coordinator, KVK, Kamrup , AAU ,Mowsam Hazarika, Assistant Director of Agriculture, Madan Mohan Dewri Bharali, Senior Agricultural Development Officer and Manabjyoti Das, Manager, ASFAC highlighted the various aspects of Gardeners Training for initiation horticultural business.
Several unemployed youths from the different parts of Assam participated in the training programme. The resource persons form the relevant subjects will impart practical training in the programme.k

The Union cabinet on Wednesday approved an institute of Indian Agriculture Research Centre in Assam. Presided over by prime minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, the meeting cleared the proposal to set up the country’s premier institute at Gogamukh in Dhemaji bordering Arunachal Pradesh. Sources in Dispur said that the Assam government had also proposed a huge plot of 587 acres in Gogamukh for the project. Many organizations in Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts have thanked the state and Centre for clearing the decks.
