However the health benefits of fruits are being threatened by human greed. A potentially harmful compound believed to have carcinogenic properties is being used to ripen fruits by corrupt business men and shady market traders who are looking to make a quick buck.
Calcium carbide is a chemical compound that is industrially used in the production of calcium cyanamide for fertilizer and also in welding. When calcium carbide comes into contact with water it produces acetylene gas that hastens the ripening of several fruits such as mangoes, bananas and apples. This chemical is extremely hazardous because it contains traces of arsenic and phosphorus which both have dangerous effects on the human body.
However, Hazarika expressed that, use of ethylene gas exogenously is considered safe when used in concentration of 10-100 PPM ( 0.001-0.01%) depending upon the crop, variety and maturity, in ripening chambers at 18-24 Degree Centigrade with 90-95% relative humidity for ripening of fruits.

Runners from home and outside are arriving in Shillong to participate in the Cherrapunjee Marathon slated for Friday.Organizers told Assam Times that more than more than 300 outside runners have so far arrived in Shillong to join the event in the morning.These are apart from around 500 others belonging to the home state. A businessman and his daughter died and two others sustained injury when suspected ULFA men sprang upon a family in Tinsukia district on Tuesday.The incident took place at around 7.30 in the evening in Bojulibon area near Pengeri.Local residents told Assam Times that three gunmen came to the residence of businessman Nandalal Shah. At least 25 people has a providential escape when the chopper carrying them noselanded on a highway in Sonitpur district on Tuesday.The incident took place at Tetubari near Gohpur area in the morning. The Pawan Hans chopper was on its way to Guwahati from Itanagar.Suddenly, the pilot found it difficult to remain on the air because of an inclement weather. Since there was no helipad nearby.Then the chopper had an emergency landing on the road much to the major relief for 25 people who were travelling to Guwahati. An orgy of untoward incidents marred the 12 hour statewide Assam bandh on Tuesday. Called by the All Assam Bengali Student Federation demanding inclusion of all religious Hindu Bengali people in NRC, the bandh started at 6 in the morning.Bandh supporters in large numbers came out to the road in many places.Some of them brunt tyres on the road to disrupt the movement of vehicles.In some places, the supporters forced some shops and markets to remain close.
