However the health benefits of fruits are being threatened by human greed. A potentially harmful compound believed to have carcinogenic properties is being used to ripen fruits by corrupt business men and shady market traders who are looking to make a quick buck.
Calcium carbide is a chemical compound that is industrially used in the production of calcium cyanamide for fertilizer and also in welding. When calcium carbide comes into contact with water it produces acetylene gas that hastens the ripening of several fruits such as mangoes, bananas and apples. This chemical is extremely hazardous because it contains traces of arsenic and phosphorus which both have dangerous effects on the human body.
However, Hazarika expressed that, use of ethylene gas exogenously is considered safe when used in concentration of 10-100 PPM ( 0.001-0.01%) depending upon the crop, variety and maturity, in ripening chambers at 18-24 Degree Centigrade with 90-95% relative humidity for ripening of fruits.

Yet another incident of rape seems to have brought bad name for Lakhimpur.The incident took place in Boginadi again where the victim is a girl of Eighth standard. The 50 year old accused perpetrator is in police custody after he raped the minor girl in the absence of her parents on Sunday.Identified as Toseshwar Hazarika, the accused was caught by the local residents and was beaten up before being handed over to police. The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee gears up for the Lok Sabha polls. Its poll panel will meet on Tuesday to shortlist the candidates for the general election. Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh said his Government viewed infrastructure development in the North East as a key element in the strategy for developing the region and increasing connectivity with the rest of the country.
Opening the north east chief ministers’ conference in New Delhi on Monday, Dr Singh directed the Planning Commission to constitute a Monitoring Committee with representatives from the region to improve coordination among ministries.
