The much awaited boxing carnival 4th Asian Women Boxing Championship got off to a colourful start at the Karmabir Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Indoor Stadium in the Sarusajai Sports Complex here yesterday evening in Guwahati. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi inaugurated the boxing extravaganza. Beijing08' Olympic bronze medal winning famed boxer Vijender Kumar along with his teamates Jitender Kumar and Akhil Kumar were the star attractions of the inaugural function.Though 12 counntries had confirmed participation but altogether 11 countries are taking part in the meet leaving Indonesia who did not turnup. The participating country teams - China, DPR Korea, Kazakstan, Korea, Macao, Mongolia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Chinese Taipei, Vietnam and host India - took part in the march past programme in the function while thrice world champion MC Mary Kom took oath on behalf of all the participants. India made a bad start as local girl Pranamika Borah lost to her Chinese opponent Dong Cheng 1-4 at the KNCB Indoor Stadium in the Sarusajai Sports Complex .. The bronze medallist in the Turkey world invitational meet in 2005, Pranamika even went pointless in the first and third round.Earlier in the opening bout of the championship Mala Rai of Nepal was beaten by Pin Meng Chien of Chinese Taipei 1-5 in the 46kg category. The boxing meet ends on 28th Sept. 2008. World class infrastructure of the sporting venues after the 33rd National Games has helped Assam to host international events in the city.

Come on India, you can win it!!! Hopefully the national media takes interest in this event so that non-cricket sports are promoted in our country. Best of luck girls!!!

Dr Gohain, his delegation to meet PM on Monday

India win 22 medals in Asian Powerlifting Championship

Indian Powerlifters returned home with handful of medals from Asian Powerlifting Championship that concluded at Ullen Batter, Mangolia on May 7. India altogether collected 22 medals which included 9 golds, 8 silvers and 5 bronzes from the championship. India sent 36 members team in the tournament and Assam based sports journalist Kula Pradip Bhagawati was also a part of the team as a media manger. Dr Gohain-led delegation leaves for Delhi

A delegation of civil society is leaving for Delhi on Saturday to help ULFA and the government break the deadlock over the talk. Main organizer Dr Hiren Gohain is understood to have received a call from the PMO to meet Manmohan Singh. But the schedule for the date with PM would be finalized only after they reach Delhi. Apart from Dr Gohain, the delegation has Dr Nirmal Chaudhury, Hiranya Bhattacharya, Dr Rohini Barua, Indibor Deuri.

Manik killers arrested

In a major achivement city police have arrested 3 persons who have confessed the killing of engineer Manik Baishya on Thursday in Guwahati. During interrogation they confessed before police that they killed the engineer for money. They include drive Ganesh Bharali, whom Baishya recruited 3 months back.

ULFA attacks tea estate office

Sensation prevails in Tinsukia after suspected Ulfa men torched a tea estate office on Thursday. Four armed youth came to the manager's office of Bajrangapur tea garden and sought manager Indra Barua. Barua was not available. The angry youths vandalized the office and set some files on fire. Sources told assamtimes that Barua received extortion notice two months back.
