The much awaited boxing carnival 4th Asian Women Boxing Championship got off to a colourful start at the Karmabir Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Indoor Stadium in the Sarusajai Sports Complex here yesterday evening in Guwahati. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi inaugurated the boxing extravaganza. Beijing08' Olympic bronze medal winning famed boxer Vijender Kumar along with his teamates Jitender Kumar and Akhil Kumar were the star attractions of the inaugural function.Though 12 counntries had confirmed participation but altogether 11 countries are taking part in the meet leaving Indonesia who did not turnup. The participating country teams - China, DPR Korea, Kazakstan, Korea, Macao, Mongolia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Chinese Taipei, Vietnam and host India - took part in the march past programme in the function while thrice world champion MC Mary Kom took oath on behalf of all the participants. India made a bad start as local girl Pranamika Borah lost to her Chinese opponent Dong Cheng 1-4 at the KNCB Indoor Stadium in the Sarusajai Sports Complex .. The bronze medallist in the Turkey world invitational meet in 2005, Pranamika even went pointless in the first and third round.Earlier in the opening bout of the championship Mala Rai of Nepal was beaten by Pin Meng Chien of Chinese Taipei 1-5 in the 46kg category. The boxing meet ends on 28th Sept. 2008. World class infrastructure of the sporting venues after the 33rd National Games has helped Assam to host international events in the city.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is schedule to arrive in Guwahati on Friday even as death toll in Guwahati serial blast has gone up to six on Friday.According to information, one person, who was seriously injured on Thursday, succumbed to his injuries overnight. Some fifty people are undergoing treatment at the Guwahati Medical College Hospital after they were admitted on Thursday.Union home minister P Chidambaram who arrived here minutes after the blast on Friday morning visited the injured people at the GMCH and understood to have instructed the authorities to ensure better treatment to these people.
There is report that army have arrested the main culprit behind the killing of journalist Jagjit Saikia in November in Kokrajhar. According to information, police arrested Chansarang alias Sanjiv from Kokrajhar on Friday midnight. Army interrogation is on. Notably, Saikia, the Kokrajhar correspondent for Amar Asom,a vernacular daily, was gunned down by miscreants at a point blank range in Kokrajhar town he was standing in front of his office in the afternoon on Neovember 22.
Hours after the string of blas that rattled the north eastern city of Guwahati, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi spoke to External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee seeking India's diplomatic pressure on Bangladesh so that North Eastern insurgent groups do not find shelter in that country. Union home minister P Chidambaram who was in the city hold a close door meeting with Gogoi where the Chief Minister admitted to lapses in security forces that could have prevented the blasts. At least five persons died and more than 30 others have been injured when three blast rocked Guwahati before the arrival of Union home minister P Chidambaram on Thursday evening.The first one took place at around 3-30 in the afternoon at Birubari area here three persons have been injured. The bomb as kept inside a GMC dustbin.This was followed but the blast at Bhotnath where three persons and ten others have been injured. It as planted on a bi-cycle which exploded at around 5-30 in the evening.Minutes after it, another bomb rocked Bhanagarh area where three dead and 30 injured. The bomb exploded under the flyover.
Two persons died and properties worth more than ten lakh were reduced to ashes when a devastating fire broke out at Salkathoni area in Charaideo sub division in upper Assam's Sivasagar district on Thursday. According to information, the deceased have been identified as Santosh Dhar and Ramesh Roy. Properties worth more than ten lakh have been damaged in the incident.
