The much awaited boxing carnival 4th Asian Women Boxing Championship got off to a colourful start at the Karmabir Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Indoor Stadium in the Sarusajai Sports Complex here yesterday evening in Guwahati. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi inaugurated the boxing extravaganza. Beijing08' Olympic bronze medal winning famed boxer Vijender Kumar along with his teamates Jitender Kumar and Akhil Kumar were the star attractions of the inaugural function.Though 12 counntries had confirmed participation but altogether 11 countries are taking part in the meet leaving Indonesia who did not turnup. The participating country teams - China, DPR Korea, Kazakstan, Korea, Macao, Mongolia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Chinese Taipei, Vietnam and host India - took part in the march past programme in the function while thrice world champion MC Mary Kom took oath on behalf of all the participants. India made a bad start as local girl Pranamika Borah lost to her Chinese opponent Dong Cheng 1-4 at the KNCB Indoor Stadium in the Sarusajai Sports Complex .. The bronze medallist in the Turkey world invitational meet in 2005, Pranamika even went pointless in the first and third round.Earlier in the opening bout of the championship Mala Rai of Nepal was beaten by Pin Meng Chien of Chinese Taipei 1-5 in the 46kg category. The boxing meet ends on 28th Sept. 2008. World class infrastructure of the sporting venues after the 33rd National Games has helped Assam to host international events in the city.

Suspected Block Widow militants have killed one more person near Haflong on Friday morning to make the sutuation more volatile. According to information, one ZP Roia was killed near Haflong at around 10-45 morning. Roia is said to be the president of the Beitei apex body. Immediately after the incident the armed rebels left for the dense forest areas nearby.Notably, the murder and mayhem in the North Cachar hills district have forced Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to cut short his China visit. The All Assam students Union has blamed it all on Delhi and Dispur for the uncomfortable situation of the Numligarh Refinery which is running a huge Rs 500 crore loss forcing it to hike the price and petrol and diesel.AASU leaders here say the government is doing precious little to resolve the problems of the refinery proposed in the historic Assam Accord, 1985. They have alleged that the situation could have been averted has the Assam government ensured 26% stake of the refinery instead of the current 10%. Violence in north North Cachar hills district has taken a grim turn on Thursday with the killing of ten truckers at Umransgu all of whom belong to the Vinoy Cement Factory.According to information, the incident took place at Panimur at round 1:30pm today when the suspected DHD(J) militants forced these to halt and set these on fire after killing the drivers and helpers. Immediately after the incident, the militants escaped creating panic in the area.Notably, on Saturday after army and police crackdown at Heralu camp in the hills district bordering Manipur, the militants announced withdrawal of ceasefire. Further, they warned the authorities to stop the on going road and power projects....

Altogether four people died when an ambulance collided its head on a truck at Milanpur Chowk in Mangaldoi las on late Wedesday night. The deceased have been identified as Antony Mushhary, Lucia Mushhary, Suraj Biswakarma and Basat Biswakarma.
