Its a big big day for regional politics in Assam. Despite stiff resistance the main Opposition Asom Gana Parishad on Tuesday announced its unification of regional forces with former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, Pulakesh Baruah, Atul Bora, Pabindra Deka et al. The epoch-making moment came up when the regional party was holding its function to mark its foundation day in Golaghat where the party was born in 1985.
AGP president Chandra Mohan Patowary announced unification of AGP(P) led by Mahanta, Trinamool Gana Parishad led under the leadership of Pulakesh Baruah and Atul Bora. All they shaked their hands with smiling faces mending all differences in the crowded function.
On the other hand, the All Assam Students Union leaders and activists across the state observed Betrayal Day opposing the home coming of Mahanta. The state's powerful student body has been protesting the entry of Mahanta terming him the betrayer besides being the man behind the infamous secret killings.
There are reports that AASU leaders and workers across the states blocked roads, staged dharna on Tuesday in protest against Mahanta's home coming. In several places, police had to disperse the AASU picketers for blocking the national highways.
But the united AGP leaders are confident the AASU would reconsider the decision. On Monday, AGP and its breakaway group AGP(P) leadership hoped that the AASU will leave the matter right now for an united AGP atleast to defeat Congress.

It is a fatal mistake for the party to once again welcome the betrayal leader. Once he was lost with dreams and fancies of his own but now he comes back to bring chaos in the party.The ultimate decision could be made by the people of Assam whether he will dynamic leader or betrayal.

The Asom Gana Parishad is a party of BETRAYERS.......remember Assam Movement,then election of the AGP to power twice....10 years of corruption, misrule....appeasing Bangladeshis after the agitation, secret killings of Assamese people in villages and towns of Assam, license to open wine shops anywhere and everywhere, suicide of ASTC employees and teachers for non-payment of salary, 400 crore LOC scam......the list goes on and on......

A bike expedition under the slogan of 'Be Indian, Be United, Be in Peace', flagged off from Tuipang of Mizoram for 'India's East to West Green Belt Bike Expedition 2011 passed the state recently. The expedition organised by Sky High Adventures Club of Rajkot in Gujarat, arrived at Dhupdhara in Goalpara District on November 1 and it left for Siliguri after a brief halt. Noted stage actor Kamala Rabha passed away after a prolonged illness at his own residence at Sakhati in Kamrup district on Friday, November 4. He was 65. His death was deeply condoled by various organisations and persons in Kamrup and Goalpara district. Born in 1946, he started his acting career in local drama groups. And later he joined several leading theatre groups of the state and involved for three decades. As an actor he first joined the Theater Bhagyadevi and then Kohinoor Theater, Meghali Theater, Anuradha Theater, Aashirwad Theater and many more. NDFB on Friday makes it clear that the peace initiative with the government won’t proceed unless and until chairman Ranjan Daimary is released immediately.
Addressing a press conference in the dense jungles along the Assam-Arunachal border, the outfit's education secretary B Naijib said figured three basic points apart from release of Ranjan Daimary. A senior police officer had a narrow escape at a shoot out in Sivasagar on Friday. But his body guard sustained bullet injured in the incident.
The incident took place near Barhat where three motorcycle born ULFA men started indiscriminate firing on a sub divisional police officer at around 7 in the evening. ULFA’s anti-talk faction threatens to launch massive strike Assam. In an email statement sent to www.assamtimes.org ULFA’s publicity wing manager Arunodoy Dohotia said urged the common people to avoid the police stations and the security forces. Dohotia said they would target the security forces deployed to flush out the insurgent outfit.

At the quarter-finals played between defending champion of North East Tamchon Memorial Football Trophy - Delhi Mizo Zirlai Pawl (DMZP) and last year first runners up Hmar Students' Association (HSA), the HSA FC defeated the DMZP today at Dr. Ambedkar Stadium, New Delhi by scoring a goal in a penalty shot in the second half of the match. In yet another bizarre incident, a young girl who was believed to have died a couple of days ago surfaced in a police station on Friday. It took place in Nagaon district. Nineteen-year-old Indrani Bora vanished with her boy friend Mukut Ali from Guwahati to Dhubri district on October 17. She was presumed to have kidnapped and killed.

Nearly 20% journalists were detected with high sugar and blood pressure during a health check up camp organized by GNRC Hospitals at Guwahati Press Club today (Oct 29,2011). Over 100 member-journalists and other individuals participated in the camp which was inaugurated by eminent actor Pranjal Saikia. The inaugural ceremony was also graced by Br NC Borah, CMD of GNRC Hospitals.
