Meghalaya police have finally nabbed MLA Julius Dorphang on Guwahati on Saturday who was wanted in connection with a sex racket. The independent legislator was arrested from a building in Guwahati city with the help of Guwahati police whom the Meghalaya counterpart requested for help to nab the MLA to be charged with running a sex racket in Shillong. Professor Gangmumei Kamei, a member in North Eastern Council (NEC) passed away on Friday at the age 77 years in Imphal. His demise was condoled in a meeting held at the Shillong based NEC Secretariat. Born in the Manipur capital city on 21 October 1939, Prof Kamei was associated with several socio-cultural organizations in the country. He was a member of the advisory committee of the Anthropological Survey of India (1984-87). Manipur is all set to go to the Assembly polls in two phases on March 4 and March 8 while the counting would take place on March 11 simultaneously with UP, Punjab Goa and Uttarakhand. Announcing the poll schedule in New Delhi on Wednesday, Chief Election Commissioner said the north eastern state will hold the first phase of polls for 60 seats from 7 in the morning to conclude at 4 in the afternoon on March 4. A moderate magnitude tremor struck no less panic in Assam and its neighbouring north eastern state on Tuesday afternoon. Measuring 5.6 in Richter scale, the tremor was felt at 2-40 in the afternoon when the panic stricken people in the high rise building came down to the open field. The earthquake was originated along the Indo-Bangladesh border 8 Km beneath the surface where the high rise buildings and towers started rattling for several seconds. Vehicles in the city of Guwahati halted as the denizens started thronging the roads seeking safety of their lives. But there is so far no report of any casualty.
