Golaghat: Last Wednesday, an insightful sensitization workshop addressing the detrimental effects of tobacco use was organized at the conference hall of the District & Sessions Judge’s office in Golaghat. The event witnessed the presence of key figures in the fight against tobacco consumption, including Secretary of DLSA Golaghat, Smt. JyotiSmita Sarma, Dr. Sunita Ekka from District Tobacco Control Cell, Golaghat, and Rudhir Prakash Sarma, Divisional Coordinator of Upper Assam Division from The UNION. Officials from the DLSA office and the health department also actively participated.
The workshop commenced with a warm welcome address, followed by an insightful discussion on the provisions of the COTPA Act 2003 by the Secretary of DLSA. Dr. Ekka provided an in-depth analysis of the tobacco burden in Assam and the diverse health implications arising from tobacco use. She took the opportunity to shed light on the achievements of the District Tobacco Control Cell in Golaghat, expressing gratitude to colleagues and stakeholders for their unwavering support.
Rudhir Sarma from The UNION emphasized the importance of a united front to combat the tobacco menace and encouraged collective efforts towards achieving a tobacco-free generation. He urged the attendees to utilize and share information about the toll-free National Tobacco Quitline Services (1800-112-356), established by the Indian government to offer counseling services for individuals keen on quitting tobacco.
The workshop culminated with the Secretary of DLSA, Golaghat, urging all present to refrain from tobacco use, prioritize their health, and disseminate the knowledge acquired during the workshop to their colleagues, friends, and family members. The event showcased a collective determination to work towards a healthier, tobacco-free community.

The Central Bureau of Investigation probing the Saradha scam has arrested media baron Manoranjana Sinh on Wednesday. The former managing director with North East Television has been arrested in Kolkata where she was interrogated for several hours for her alleged involvement in the multi crore chit fund scam. The CBI team will produced before the metropolitan court on Thursday.The jailed Saradha chief Sudipto Sen in her purported letter alleged to have paid for over Rs 20 crore to Sinh to set up a channel in Guwahati. One person died and another sustained serious injury when a bike rammed into another biker in Duliajan on Tuesday. The mishap took place at Chiringkhat where Phuleswar Lahon who was riding on his bike hit another biker Apurba Phatowal from the back side. The duo were rushed to the hospital. But Phatowal succumbed to his injury. Lahon is battling with death at the Assam Medical College Hospital.

A local court in Guwahati remanded Gopinath Das to two days police custody a day after the AIUDF MLA from Boko was caught in connection with a rape case. Amid tight security police produced the suspended AIUDF leader asking for 5 days remand. But the court have him to police custody for two days. He allegedly raped his 14 year old domestic help inside his car and he has been remaining incommunicado for the last one month after police booked him in the case. Finally, the Boko police have arrested Gopinath Das nearly a month after they booked the AIUDF MLA in Boko in a rape case. Das, who allegedly raped his 14 year old domestic help was nabbed from Rangiya when he was on his way to surrender before the court on Sunday. Immediately after his arrest, he was taken to the Palashbari police station where a team of senior police officers has been interrogating him.Police booked him on August 29 under section 343 IPC for wrongful confinement, read with Section 4/8 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act 2012 after the victim and her parents lodged he complaint at Mandira outpost under Boko police.
