Golaghat Hosts Tobacco Awareness Workshop Advocating a Smoke-Free Future

Golaghat: Last Wednesday, an insightful sensitization workshop addressing the detrimental effects of tobacco use was organized at the conference hall of the District & Sessions Judge’s office in Golaghat. The event witnessed the presence of key figures in the fight against tobacco consumption, including Secretary of DLSA Golaghat, Smt. JyotiSmita Sarma, Dr. Sunita Ekka from District Tobacco Control Cell, Golaghat, and Rudhir Prakash Sarma, Divisional Coordinator of Upper Assam Division from The UNION. Officials from the DLSA office and the health department also actively participated.

The workshop commenced with a warm welcome address, followed by an insightful discussion on the provisions of the COTPA Act 2003 by the Secretary of DLSA. Dr. Ekka provided an in-depth analysis of the tobacco burden in Assam and the diverse health implications arising from tobacco use. She took the opportunity to shed light on the achievements of the District Tobacco Control Cell in Golaghat, expressing gratitude to colleagues and stakeholders for their unwavering support.

Rudhir Sarma from The UNION emphasized the importance of a united front to combat the tobacco menace and encouraged collective efforts towards achieving a tobacco-free generation. He urged the attendees to utilize and share information about the toll-free National Tobacco Quitline Services (1800-112-356), established by the Indian government to offer counseling services for individuals keen on quitting tobacco.

The workshop culminated with the Secretary of DLSA, Golaghat, urging all present to refrain from tobacco use, prioritize their health, and disseminate the knowledge acquired during the workshop to their colleagues, friends, and family members. The event showcased a collective determination to work towards a healthier, tobacco-free community.

City bus service at night

In a move that would encourage the late night commuters in Guwahati, the Assam State Transport Corporation is introducing night services across the city from Thursday. ASTC officials told Assam Times that the corporation initially is running 20 on three arterial routes from 8 at night.“Our buses will ply on the Khanapara round trip covering Panbazar, Adabari, Basistha Chariali while another route will cover from Jalukbari to Khanapara via Adabari-Uzanbazar-Ganeshguri. The third route will cover from the Forest Gate to ISBT via Noonmati, Uzanbazar, Jalukbari,” said an ASTC official. The fares against the night bus service would be 50 per cent more than the existing fare of city buses.

Smuggling den: 1 killed in Bihali

Behali reserved forest has become a safe den for timber smugglers who have been plundering forest resources without any hindrance. One person was killed when the smugglers fired upon a team of guards on Wednesday.  The incident took place in Rongagorah block where the forest guards found an unidentified body with bullet injury mark.

Akhil Gogoi vs Mrinal Saikia

Settlement of villagers in the Kaziranga National Park triggers an intensified war of words between Mrinal Kumar Saikia and Akhil Gogoi. The BJP leader and businessman Saikia has moved the Gauhati High Court seeking its intervention to evict the settlers to save the world heritage site. But the KMSS leader is dead opposed to the idea saying the settlers would help the national park free from the illegal settlers. Detention camp for 3 districts

The Assam government has notified Central Jails of Jorhat, Dibrugarh and Tezpur as detention centre to keep declared foreigners temporarily till such separate Detention Centre are established for the purpose. Only male inmates may be accommodated in Central Jail, Dibrugarh whereas both male and female inmates may be accommodated in Central Jails of Jorhat and Tezpur.

Terror tentacles in Tinsukia

After a brief silence, terror starts spreading its diabolic tentacles in Tinsukia district when suspected ULFA men targeted a police station on Wednesday.  The sensational incident took place at 8 in the evening when five youths in army uniform appeared in front of the Kakopothar police station and started indiscriminate firing at the policemen. Initially, they lobbed a rocket launcher which refused to strike. Gogoi stable; but needs rest

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has arrived in Guwahati a dayafter he was taken ill in Tinsukia. Gogoi, who cancelled three public meeting in the upper Assam district on Wednesdayis being attended bya special team of doctors from the Assam Medical College Hospital. “He is stable and fit.
