Golaghat: Last Wednesday, an insightful sensitization workshop addressing the detrimental effects of tobacco use was organized at the conference hall of the District & Sessions Judge’s office in Golaghat. The event witnessed the presence of key figures in the fight against tobacco consumption, including Secretary of DLSA Golaghat, Smt. JyotiSmita Sarma, Dr. Sunita Ekka from District Tobacco Control Cell, Golaghat, and Rudhir Prakash Sarma, Divisional Coordinator of Upper Assam Division from The UNION. Officials from the DLSA office and the health department also actively participated.
The workshop commenced with a warm welcome address, followed by an insightful discussion on the provisions of the COTPA Act 2003 by the Secretary of DLSA. Dr. Ekka provided an in-depth analysis of the tobacco burden in Assam and the diverse health implications arising from tobacco use. She took the opportunity to shed light on the achievements of the District Tobacco Control Cell in Golaghat, expressing gratitude to colleagues and stakeholders for their unwavering support.
Rudhir Sarma from The UNION emphasized the importance of a united front to combat the tobacco menace and encouraged collective efforts towards achieving a tobacco-free generation. He urged the attendees to utilize and share information about the toll-free National Tobacco Quitline Services (1800-112-356), established by the Indian government to offer counseling services for individuals keen on quitting tobacco.
The workshop culminated with the Secretary of DLSA, Golaghat, urging all present to refrain from tobacco use, prioritize their health, and disseminate the knowledge acquired during the workshop to their colleagues, friends, and family members. The event showcased a collective determination to work towards a healthier, tobacco-free community.
An internal group of ministers will be visiting the state’s flood-hit areas in a day or two. Disclosing this before reporters in Guwahati, DoNER minister Jitendra Prasad Singh said that the Centre has yet to received any letter from Dispur asking from grant to help the state bail out of the flood situation.But, he said, Dispur will receive Rs 207 crore from the Centre to manage the current situation arising out of the flood fury.Earlier, he along with revenue minister Dr Bhumidhar Barman visited the flood-hit areas and met the marooned people.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi said on Monday that the current flood wave has claimed 14 lives apart from affecting 8,26,000 people in 14 districts.Addressing a press conference in Dispur, he alleged to have received insufficient fund from the Centre. He said the water level starts receding adding that 2 lakh people are still in the relief camps.
Two bikers died when their two wheelers on which they were traveling hit a stranded truck in Barpeta district on Sunday midnight.The incident took place on the Barpeta-Howly road when the duo believed to have lost the control over the two wheelers.Identified as Sujit Karmakar and Lipon Karmakar the duo died on the spot.
