Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma Remembered Across Assam on Student Day

KOKRAJHAR: Citizens from various communities, particularly the Bodo community, commemorated the exemplary contributions of Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma, former president of the All Bodo Students Union (ABSU), on his 68th birth anniversary, celebrated as 'Student Day' across different districts of Assam with a series of day-long events on Sunday.

In Kokrajhar, the central committee of the All Bodo Students Union, in collaboration with the Upendra Nath Brahma Trust (UNBT) and the Kokrajhar district committee of ABSU, convened at Thulungapuri Dotma amidst a massive turnout of public and student representatives. ABSU President Dipen Boro unfurled the union flag, followed by heartfelt floral tributes to Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma at his tomb and samadhi sthal.

The event witnessed symbolic gestures towards sustainable peace, including the release of balloons and white pigeons by esteemed guests, alongside sapling plantations symbolizing the spirit of the day. Notable figures paying homage to Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma included Dr. Surath Narzary, President of the Bodo Sahitya Sabha, and renowned journalist Rupa Chenoy from Mumbai.

ABSU President Dipen Boro underscored Bodofa's lifelong dedication to the welfare and upliftment of marginalized communities, urging the government to confer upon him the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honor, in recognition of his enduring legacy.

"The All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) demands the Bharat Ratna for Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma, a leader revered not only by Bodos but also by students and the underprivileged," stated Dipen Boro, highlighting Bodofa's pivotal role in the Bodoland movement and his vision for a literate society based on the principles of non-violence.

Similar observances took place in Tamulpur, where the Tamulpur district committee of ABSU, in collaboration with local entities, honored Bodofa's memory, with Bodoland Territorial Region's Chief Executive Member Pramod Boro emphasizing the significance of Bodofa's ideals in shaping a brighter future for students.

In recognition of Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma's enduring impact, the Assam government officially declared March 31st as 'Chatra Divosh' (Student Day) across the state, ensuring that his legacy continues to inspire generations.

The commemoration of Bodofa's birth anniversary underscores his indelible mark on Assam's socio-political landscape, reaffirming the commitment to his vision of empowerment and progress for all.

A high police officials from Chirang, Kokrajhar and Bongaigaon district meet was held at police guest house in Chirang district on Thursday. Kula Saikia, DGP (special branch) attended the meet and reviewed the law and order in the districts. Saikia held meeting with SPs of the lower Assam region. An elderly woman was murdered by her son-in-law at Samsingkila Salkonta village under Karigaon police outpost late last night in Kokrajhar district. Death body was identified as Ante Basumatary(50) and body has been brought Kokrajhar for post mortem. The Chirang District Magistrate Binod Kumar Deka has imposed ban on the use of coloured and ordinary polythene bags within the district. He has issued this order today under section 144 CrPC for enforcing restriction on manufacture, store, distribute, sell and disposal made of virgine and recycled polythene bags, which are less than 50 microns in thickness.  The order further banned on suchets using plastic materials for storing, packaging and selling.
