Congress Accuses Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma of Undermining Democracy, Calls for Public Resistance

The Congress party has alleged that an "undeclared emergency" is prevailing in Assam under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's government. Speaking at a press conference at Rajiv Bhavan in Guwahati, AICC Secretary in charge of Assam, Manoj Chauhan, accused the Chief Minister of suppressing constitutional rights and using police forces to target journalists, MPs, and opposition leaders.

Chauhan stated that the Congress party will launch a public movement against the oppression and alleged that Sarma has been exerting pressure on all sections of society. “In his obsession with power, the Chief Minister is violating basic rights. The more he tries to suppress dissent, the stronger the backlash will be. In 2026, the people of Assam will overthrow his government,” he asserted.

Referring to a post on the social media platform ‘X’ by an account named ‘Grok,’ Chauhan highlighted that when asked about India’s most corrupt Chief Minister, the name of Himanta Biswa Sarma emerged. He challenged Sarma to shut down the ‘Grok’ handle in India or take legal action against Elon Musk if he had the courage.

Chauhan also accused the Chief Minister of fearing democratic processes due to his alleged involvement in corruption. “Even when a BJP MLA in the Assam Assembly attempted to attack an opposition legislator, no action was taken against him. Moreover, the government has tried to tarnish the reputation of Congress MP and Deputy Leader of Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi by spreading false propaganda against him and his wife,” he alleged.

The Congress leader further pointed out multiple instances of attacks on opposition leaders. “MP Rakibul Hussain was attacked in broad daylight in Nagaon, Congress workers were assaulted in Gogamukh, and now journalist Dilawar Hussain from ‘Cross Current’ has been arrested under a conspiracy,” he said.

Chauhan claimed that the Chief Minister is now known for taking the law into his own hands. “Rahul Gandhi had already labeled Himanta Biswa Sarma as the most corrupt Chief Minister, and today, that has been proven true,” he said.

He also alleged that the BJP had conspired to win 400 seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections to change the Constitution. However, after Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra,’ the public awareness has made it impossible for the BJP to execute its plans. As a result, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will now be compelled to take an oath under the existing Constitution, he claimed.

Chauhan further asserted that the Congress party would expose all corruption scandals involving Himanta Biswa Sarma and present the facts to the people. He alleged that the government has even restricted police stations from registering complaints to cover up crimes. Despite this, NCRB data indicates that Assam remains one of the states with the highest crimes against women in India.

Highlighting the deteriorating law-and-order situation in Assam, Chauhan mentioned that six foreign countries, including the USA, Australia, and Canada, have warned their citizens that travel to Assam is unsafe. This information, he claimed, was admitted by the Assam government itself in the Assembly.

The press conference was attended by Assam Pradesh Congress Media Department Chairperson Bedabrata Bora and Guwahati Metropolitan Congress President Gopal Sharma.
