Father Files Complaint with Human Rights Commission After Losing Daughter Due to Medical Negligence in Nagaon

The state of Assam's healthcare system has come under intense scrutiny following a tragic incident in Nagaon, where a father lost his daughter due to alleged medical negligence. Dr. Surajit Kumar Bhagwat, a spokesperson for Nagaon Medical College, has filed a complaint with the Human Rights Commission after his 21-year-old daughter, Angana Bhardwaj, passed away due to a lack of timely medical care.

On December 16, 2024, Angana suddenly fell ill and lost consciousness. Dr. Bhagwat rushed her to a private clinic, Kapili Nursing Home in Nagaon, where treatment was started immediately. However, her condition worsened rapidly, and the clinic, lacking essential emergency equipment like an ECG machine and oxygen facilities, recommended transferring her to the Nagaon Medical College.

Despite quickly transporting her to the medical college, Dr. Bhagwat found that the emergency department was understaffed, with no doctors present at the time of arrival. After waiting in vain for any emergency treatment, he was forced to take her to another private facility, but it was too late. Angana passed away, unable to receive the critical oxygen support she needed.

The incident has deeply shaken Dr. Bhagwat, who is now seeking justice for his daughter’s untimely death. He has raised several serious allegations against both the Kapili Nursing Home and Nagaon Medical College, claiming they failed in their duty to provide timely and appropriate medical care.

In a heartfelt press conference, Dr. Bhagwat shared the painful experience of watching his daughter die before his eyes and emphasized the need for improvements in the healthcare system to prevent similar tragedies in the future. He has demanded accountability from the authorities and legal action against those responsible.

The Human Rights Commission has registered a case and instructed an investigation into the negligence of both healthcare facilities. The District Magistrate has been asked to conduct an inquiry into the matter.

This tragic incident has once again highlighted the severe shortcomings in Assam's healthcare sector, as many continue to question whether the claims of progress and development by the state’s leaders, particularly in healthcare, are truly being reflected on the ground. Dr. Bhagwat’s fight for justice raises important questions about the quality and reliability of medical services in Assam and whether the state government and healthcare officials will take meaningful action to address the flaws in the system.
