Udalguri: With political activities intensifying in the run-up to the 2025 Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections, the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) has stepped up its grassroots mobilisation to counter the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) declared intent to contest the polls independently.
The move comes in response to recent remarks by Assam BJP President and Darrang-Udalguri MP, Dilip Saikia, who asserted the BJP’s plans to field candidates across as many of the 40 BTC constituencies as possible. In a robust show of strength, the UPPL on Tuesday held a major joining programme at Chaprabari in Mazbat, Udalguri district, where 823 new members — including a large number of women — formally joined the party.
Speaking at the event, Raju Dhakal, Officer on Special Duty to BTC Chief Executive Member Pramod Boro, highlighted the momentum building behind the UPPL. “This is just the beginning. In the coming days, more and more people will come under the UPPL banner,” he stated.
Echoing the optimism, BTC Deputy Chief Executive Member and Udalguri MLA, Gobinda Chandra Basumatary, said the wave of new members was a testament to public trust in the party’s governance. “Over the past few years, people have witnessed visible progress under the current administration. The swelling support only strengthens our resolve to continue working for the inclusive development of every community in the region,” he said.
UPPL’s Udalguri District President, Rabindra Basumatary, and other senior leaders were also present, reaffirming the party’s commitment to expanding its reach and consolidating support as the BTC elections draw closer.
