Noted litterateur Rong Bong Terang has been elected the new president of Asom Sahitya Sabha on Sunday. The announcement to this effect was made by the state’s largest literary body came up at the Bhgawati Prasad Baruah Bhawan in Guwahati after the counting of votes sent by the district bodies ended. Kanak Chandra Sarma will be vice president while Dr Paramananda Rajbanshi has been elected as the secretary of the literary body. Terang is a litterateur whose epoch Rong Milir Hanhi sent him into the acme of glory. Contemporary social life in the state is very much there in his literary works . Jak Heruwa Pakhi is all about the ethnic frenzy between Karbis and the Kukis. The Assam agitation is what dominates his Krantikalor Oshru….During that time, he was attracted by the prose works of Hem Barooah’s Hagor Dekhisa not to speak of Banikanta Kakoti’s Sahitya Aaru Prem. Besides, he wrote a lot for Karbi language and literature. Mention may be made of Karbi Lamkuru, Karbi Kala Aaditag. Besides, some of his notable works in Assamese literature are Rong Milir Hanhi, Karbi Sahitya-Sanskritit Abhumuki, Nila Orchid, Smritir Papori and what not. It was Terang who for the first time used the word Karbi Anglong in his lyric.

Rongbong Terang is a great writer and a well-known personality of Diphu, Karbi Anglong in Assam. His work is really appreciable and unique. Assam Sahitya Sabha will go a long way under his presidentship. We wish him all the good luck and prayers for future.

Asam Sahity Sabha since its inception selecting the person as its President who hiself is an institution. This time Rongbong Terang has been selected to Chair the glorious organisation of the people of Assam. Hope, he will be able to lead the present complex situation for better cause of Assam and the North East with selfless design.

Former bureaucrat from Assam Harishankar Brahma has been appointed as the new Election Commissioner. He was appointed after the elevation of S.Y. Quraishi as the commission's head. A1975 batch IAS officer from Andhra Pradesh cadre Brahma is a former Union power secretary. President appointed Harishankar Brahma as the Election Commissioner in the Election Commission of India with effect from the date he assumes the office. Brahma is the second person from the North East after J.M. Lyngdoh, who retired as the Chief Election Commissioner in 2004, to become the Election Commissioner.
Incessent rains have flooded in Assam displacing at least 50,000 people in Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districs. According to information, Singora river, a tributary of the Brahmaputra river is overflowing and entered at least 40 villages forcing residents to take shelter on raised platforms and railway tracks. A breach of about 20 to 30 metres in two embankments and that led to floodwaters entering human settlements. The Brahmaputra traverses its first stretch of 1,625 km in Tibet region, the next 918 km in India and the remaining 363 km through neighbouring Bangladesh before flowing.

Film critic-journalist Utpal Borpujari has been nominated as a member of the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) jury for the 34th Montreal World Film Festival (MWFF), considered among one of the most prestigious film festivals globally. Despite impartial patrolling there seems to be no respite in Charaipung where armed miscreants suspected to be from Arunachal Pradesh set on fire several houses at Ashinbasti on Sunday night. This was done a few hours after Assam police and its counterpart in Arunachal Pradesh began a joint patrolling in the entire trouble torn areas.

Charaipung in Sivasagar district bordering Arunachal Pradesh is remaining tense on Sunday even as the indefinite economic blockade further seems to have compounded the problem. A group of armed miscreants set on fire several houses on Sunday morning and detained a local resident for several hours. Meanwhile, Assam police and their Arunachal Pradesh counterparts with CRPF are on patrolling duty to thwart any fresh string of violence. A rickshaw puller was killed and a minor boy was injured at a crossfire between police and security forces in the outskirt of Guwahati city on Sunday. The incident took place at Sualkuchi when security forces came to see three armed ULFA cadres who attacked them forcing the security forces to hit back. A rickshaw puller Maniram Rabha fell seriously injured in the crossfire along with a minor boy. A hardcore ULFA cadre Chiraj alias Harekrishna Deka was captured at the end of the encounter while two others managed to escape from the spot. A seriously injured Maniram was shifted to the GMCH. But succumbed to his injuries.
A rickshow puller and a minor boy were injured during an encounter between security forces and ULFA in the outskirt of Guwahati on Sunday.
The encounter took at Hospital Chowk in Sualkuchi at around 10 in the morning where a hardcore cadre of the proscribed outfit was apprehended. The arrested ULFA cadre was identified as Harekrishna Deka alias Chiraj.
According to information, the incident took place when two ULFA cadres were on their way to collect money from a local businessman in the area they demanded earlier.
