Serious concern has gripped the residents of Nangalamora area in Sivasagar district following the alarming condition of the Desang River bridge linking Sepon with Sunpura.
The bridge, which partially collapsed on January 16, 2022, had since been closed to heavy vehicles. Recently, another portion gave way, leaving the structure open only to two-wheelers.
A new bridge scheme was taken up during 2022–23, with an outlay of about ₹11 crore. The work was targeted for completion by June 18, 2025. But the progress remains unsatisfactory. Meanwhile, river erosion has further endangered the structure, rendering the road wholly unfit for public use.
The plight of commuters, schoolchildren, and patients has grown acute. On September 8, the local populace staged a protest demonstration, demanding expeditious action from the authorities.
The agitators called for speedy construction, and in the interim, for provision of a Bailey bridge or alternate traffic arrangement, so that relief may be given to the suffering masses.
The public has urged the department concerned to take prompt and decisive steps in the matter.
