Congress’ concern for AGP

With the declaration of Lok Sabha elections by the Election Commission of India, all the national and regional political parties have geared up their activities to grab power at the centre of administration. Polarization of political parties has begun with various old friends changing sides and new friends coming closer. Whereas, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has lost a few old friends in the country, it has succeeded in shaking hands with new friends in the north-eastern part of the country.

In Assam, the activities are on full swing. The picture is almost clear as major alliances have already taken place and the formation of Third Front has taken back seat. Attempt by Left parties with Asom United Democratic Front (AUDF) and a few others could not bring any fruitful result.

Major and important alliance of regional Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and national Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has puzzled the ruling Congress in the state. The important figures in the ruling party, including the chief minister, Tarun Gogoi and the party’s spokesperson, Himanta Biswa Sarma have made strong remarks against the alliance showing their concern for the regional character of the AGP. They have taken it as the ‘regional party has surrendered before a national party’. While making such remarks they forgot that their party has also made such attempts and still trying to get support from the smaller groups and independents not only in Assam but throughout the country. The AGP has ridiculed the concern for regionalism by the Congress leaders. Taking a dig at the Congress, the party has said that the outbursts from the senior leaders of the Congress regarding the alliance were clear indications of the fear rising in the Congress camp.

The BJP functionaries have pointed out to the media persons that the pattern in the Lok Sabha polls showed that the combined strength of the BJP and AGP would have totally routed out the Congress. The BJP state vice president, Palit Bora recently said that the Congress was aware of this fact and that is the reason they were worried about the alliance.

It may be mentioned in this context that the BJP appeared in the political scene of Assam in the year 1985 and succeeded in securing 0.37 per cent votes in the Lok Sabha polls. The AGP had secured 33.55 percent, while the Congress had secured 23.43 per cent votes. The AGP got seven seats and the Congress only four, but BJP failed to open its account. Looking to the voting pattern of the last Lok Sabha elections, it was clear indication that the AGP-BJP combined would have emerged the winner.

In the 1991 Lok Sabha polls, BJP got 9.06 percent votes and won two seats. The AGP got 23.47 percent votes and secured one seat, while the Congress securing 28.49 percent votes wrested 8 seats. In the Lok Sabha polls of 2004 the BJP got 30.72 percent votes and won two seats and AGP getting 19.90 percent votes got two seats. The Congress got 34.97 percent votes and bagged 9 seats.

Afraid of BJP-AGP alliance the Congress leaders are trying to break it giving the name of regional and national alliance. The voters are watching the trend with great interest. The concern for the region by the ruling party indirectly indicates that it has failed to perform its responsibilities towards the state’s development; otherwise there was not reason to be much concerned.

congress concern for agp is legitimate.an alliance between agp and bjp which togedar has larger vote share is worrisome.but time will tell whether this will have impact in election or not.AUDF is a big factor in this election too.

The Society for Socio-Economic-Development in the Region (SSEDR), a city based NGO, has raised a question mark on the initiative taken by the Assam Government with Pollution Control Board (PCB), Assam for conservation of Bharalu and Kalang rivers. With an idea to get rapid development of the Northeastern region, the Union government constituted a separate directorate, namely, the Directorate of North Eastern Region (DoNER), which has now turned to ‘do nothing in entire region’. This can be judged by the activities going on in the two major paper mills in the state of Assam, which are facing a threat of closure at any time. These paper mills, the units of Hindustan Paper Corporation Ltd, the Nagaon Paper Mills, Jagiroad in Morigaon district and the Cachar Paper Mill, in Panchgram of Barak valley, are suffering from acute shortage of raw materials for several years. The production in both mills have been badly affected and workers have...
Industrial development in India has ever been dependent on the political will of leadership since independence. It was because of the fact that no ‘fair policy’ could be framed by the Union Government for ‘equal development’ of all the regions of the country simultaneously. That is why some of the areas remained completely neglected and others developed beyond limit. Besides the metropolis and a few industrial cities, where opportunities were ample for industrial growth, there have been vast disparity in the growth of industries. The industrialization of a particular area depends fully on the degree of political influence in its favor.A few industries in the country have been setup on the...
Emergency imposed by former prime minister,  Indira Gandhi in the year 1975, was no doubt a bad thing for democracy, but in no way it was harmful to make the nation disciplined. That is the reason even some of her staunch critics had appreciated the steps taken by her at that crucial juncture.Democracy is for the disciplined people and unless the people are disciplined, the democracy has no meaning. A wrong notion is prevailing in our country about democracy now-a-days. The simple interpretation of democracy i.e. equal rights in society, is taken as freedom of speech, freedom of work, freedom to abuse or commit nuisance, freedom to live as per one’s life-style. It is because of this...

It was a turning point in my life at the end of year 1981, when I decided to go for a change after a successful 20 years of marketing experience. The reason behind the idea was the fatigue of the long travelling experiences, the growing age and stable family life.A small piece of advertisement in the English daily 'The Assam Tribune' on November 14, 1981, requiring sub editors for an upcoming English daily news paper attracted my attention and I did not make a second thought and applied for the same. India’s partition in the year 1947 on the basis of religion was a great mistake. It was a part of conspiracy planted by the British rulers, who succeeded in managing Muslim League leader, Mohammad Ali Jinnah to be rigid on his stand for a homeland and independent nation for the followers of Islam dividing India between the Muslim majority and other communities dominated areas. Despite all efforts made by Mahatma Gandhi to keep the country united, the result was not conducive due to sticky stand of both the Indian National Congress (INC) and the Muslim League (ML) leaders, which led to the danger of chaotic situation in the country. The situation could have resulted in long stay of the...
