Guwahati: Guwahati city police have arrested a private hospital owner with a lady doctor and a youth for allegedly conducting an abortion to a minor on Sunday night. Panbazaar Police has registered a foeticide case against them.
The girl aging about 14 years accused her lover Amar Sharma (30 years) of Raha in Nagaon district for her pregnancy. According to her, Amar misguided her taking advantage of her inocence. When Amar came to know about her pregnancy, he brought her to a city nursing home Wintrobe and arranged for immediate abortion paying a cash amount of Rs. 2000 to the hospital authorities. When police got information about this,a team from Pan Bazaar police station reached the hospital and rescued the girl. Supreme Court of India recently held that any kind of sexual relations with a minor is equivalent to rape.

Unmarried mothers pose a serious problem and burden to the society. Unfortunately, the magnitude of the problem is ever increasing all over world, and Assam is no exception. The question is whether we expose these unfortunate mothers to the public with the help of police and the media or help them out of crisis by medical termination of pregnancy under expert care instead of allowing them to go for unsafe abortions under the quacks (a desparate step most likely to be taken by most of the guardians). I do not think that our society is liberal enough to rehabilate these victims and wonder how people who make such hues and cries over such incidents of MTP would react should such misfortune befall to some minor members in their own family. Can someone solve a doctor's dilemma in a situation like this ?

I entirely agree with Dr. Gogoi. I think instead of creating a ruckus, the police should take care of the person who is responsible and the unmarried mothers should be helped in all possible ways and re-habilate them.
Utter insecurity still persists in Guwahati these days. Despite heavy presence of security forces, suspected Ulfa militants killed an engineer after he was kidnapped on the way back to his home on Thursday. The incident took place when agriculture department engineer Manik Baishya called up his wife at 7.30 evening that he was forcibly towards Jalukbari. Later at 9.30 pm his body was recovered near APRO office. It was learnt that Baishya received a number of phone calls demanding money. He also took up it with city police.
Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi says the government finds it a convenient time to sit in talk with Ulfa and other insurgent outfits as most of them have come forward. Addressing a pressmeet in Delhi on Thursday,h e said,'we are trying to bring Paresh Barua to the process." Gogoi said safe passage is ready for elusive Barua if he drops sovereignty. Replying to a question, Gogoi said the court will decide on Ulfa leaders' release.
Police have arrested a hardcore Ulfa cadre in Guwahati on Thursday. The Ulfaman is being identified as Binoy Baishya from 709 battalion. He was arrested from Hengrabari area in the city.

A heavy downpour has disrupted normal life in Guwahati besides fueling the risk of floodwaters in the city. A CBI special court on Wednesday remanded Amjad Khan to CBI custody for 5 days a day after a whopping Rs 13.45 crore was recovered during a raid in Guwahati.
The entire amount is understood to have been kept by his brother in law of R H Khan, the accused in the multi crore scam in the North Cachar Hills district. Khan, the deputy director of the social welfare district attached to this hills district has been absconding after procuring bail.
He was chargesheeted by CBI as it was probing the case few months back. The deputy director along with a circle of his colleagues and contractors has siphoned off a huge amount meant for development of the hills district.

Preparation for ULFA-Govt talk gathers momentum on Wednesday. Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi met Union Home Minister P Chidambaram in Delhi. Sources told Assam Times that Gogoi met the home minister at 3 in the afternoon who assured him of all help required to ensure talk with ULFA. Gogoi formally urged Chidambaram to appoint former IB director PC Halder as the government interlocutor in the talk with ULFA. Halder has been interlocuting in the centre's talk with NSCN-IM.
Former intelligence bureau director P C Halder is likely to be appointed as the government interlocutor to hold talk with ULFA.
According to reliable sources, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Tuesday called on Halder and expressed his desire to get him in the post. If everything remains intact, Halder will be the interlocutor for talk with this banned outfit.

CBI recovered Rs.12 crores on Tuesday from the residence of RH Khan, the former Deputy Director of the State Social Welfare Department. Khan is one of accused in the 1000 crore rupees terror-funding scam in NC Hills district of Assam.
3 died and 10 have been injured when a winger collided its head on a truck in Darrang district on Tuesday. The incident took place at Dolgaon where 3 persons died on the spot. Injured people have been rushed to hospital.
