Assamese Lady honoured Rajiv Gandhi Award

On the occasions of the 66th birth anniversary of Late Prime Minister of India Shri Rajiv Gandhiji , All India National Unity Conference on National Integration and Communal Harmony awarded the RAJIV GANDHI RASHTRIYA EKTA SAMMAN 2009 for outstanding contribution and performance in the field of education, entrepreneurship, social activities, science and technology and such other fields towards development of our society. The Function was held at India International Center, New Delhi on August 19.


Smti Geetika Barooah Changkakoti has been distinguished to recieve this award for 2009 amongst other awardees selected from various corners of India as an eminent entrepreneur of the North Eastern Region of Assam in India. Prior to her this award has been received by prominent personalities like Mother Teresa, Pt. Vishwamohan Bhatt, Rusi Mody, Dr. S Padmavati, Navjot Singh Sidhu, A.K.Shukla (CMD Lic), Birju Maharaj, Hari Prasad Chaurasia, Dr. Balamurli Krishna, Sushmita Sen, and other distinguished personalities of India.


The Awards were given away by his Hon'ble Minister of State, Govt of India Ajay Makanji and Former Governor of Assam Bhisma Narayan Singhji| Other distinguished guests for the occasion were Dr. G.V.G.Krishnamurty (Former Election Commissioner), Dr. Justice A.R. Lakshmanan (Chairman , Law Commission of India), A.I.C.C. Gen Secy, Choudhury Prem Singh, Gurinder Singh ( Editor Indian Observer), Sushil Kr Shinde, Sriprakash Jaiswal, Oscar Fernandes, Joginder Singh. The function was attended by a host of guests and dignitaries to mark the occasion.

Normal business activities in Guwahati have come to a grinding halt as the traders on Saturday in protest against the move to the trade license fee by 300% by the Guwahati Municipal Corporation. With this day long bandh the traders across the city are demanding roll back the trade license hike. Fierce gunfight erupted between security forces and militants at a polling station in Karbi Anglong district while two powerful IED were recovered in Assam's Autonomous District constituency where voting was held in the first phase of Lok Sabha elections day. The Assam-Nagaland border areas in Sivasagar district slips into a simmering situation after Nazira police foiled the bid of group of officials from Longleng district administration to set up a polling booth in Geleky. The officials under the Tamlu legislative assembly constituency arrived in Borhola on Wednesday evening headed by Tamlu SDO who asked his Nazira counterpart to allow them to set up polling booth in the place. Nazira sub divisional police officer and the SDO did not allow them to do so and asked the Nagaland officials to leave the place. A major incident of blast was averted on Thursday when an improvised explosive devise was found near a polling station in Assam's Autonomous District (ST) Lok Sabha constituency. Accoridng official sources, a police patrolling party found the IED at Disobai, under Bokolia police station of Karbi Anglong district early this morning prior to commencement of polling at 7 am. Later police defused the bomb by disconnecting its wires, the sources said, adding, security was on high alert in the constituency comprising the twin hill districts of Karbi Anglong and North Cachar Hills district.
