Independence Day in Kuwait

Inquisitiveness, curiosity n proudness filled me as I got ready to attend the 62nd Independence Day at Indian Embassy,Kuwait. As we drove to the Embassy at 6.30am to reach and be part of the flag hoisting at 7.10am ,my mind was filled with different thoughts…thoughts of the many Indenpence Day we celebrated in our motherland Assam under the shadow of Assam Bandh . My one year daughter too wake up early that day as if she understood the importance of this special day. As we approach’d the embassy my husband park’d our car atleast 1km from the embassy as there was no space as hundreds of cars were already parked. As we came near the embassy we were pleasantly surprised to see hundreds of Indians from different walks of life and some like me with infants. People had Indian Flags in their hands. I felt so happy and proud when my infant daughter too took a flag and was waving. Jai Hind, Jai Bharat, Mera Bharat Mahan echoed in the air. The “Borah Drummers”, the members are Guajarati Muslims exhibited their talent and skills. Small school children and Doctors community sang patriotic songs. The Indian Ambassador Ajai Malhotra hosted the national tri-colour flag as we all stood there with proudness. He read out the Prime Minister of India Dr Manmohan Singh’s message ,the speech which he gave to millions of Indians from the Red Fort .He also read out the various facilities and schemes that the embassy has taken for thousands of Indian workers. After the cultural programme was over ,the Ambassador met the common people and listen to their grievances if any. Deep feeling of proudness enveloped thousands who gathered there to be part of such a celebration. Mughal Mahal, a famous Indian restaurant gave free breakfast (paratha,chola,sweets) to thousands of people who gathered . Free supplements on Independence Day were distributed by The Times(Kuwait’s premier weekly newspaper) and Arab Times(Kuwait’s national daily).


In a foreign country that too in a Middle East Muslim country like Kuwait we celebrated it so much fun, proudness and most importantly without fear, then why not in our motherland Assam??Can’t we be like rest of India and foreign countries in observing our Independence Day???When will such a day come???These thoughts filled my mind as we drove back home.


I remembered Jawaharlal Nehru’s Independence Day speech…. "Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we will redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially. At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance.... We end today a period of ill fortune, and India discovers herself again."


Its time for us, all assamese people to defy the Bandh and celebrate it with love, fun and frolic.

The Ambassador infact read out the President of India's message and not the Prime Minister's. Anyhow thanks to Parimita for sharing her thoughts. We too feel proud like her to be part of the celebrations of our great nation.

Pom-ba, it was a great coverage for us to know about how NRIs feel about their country and Independence. We Indians are actually, patriotic by birth; it is in our subconscious to feel great and own about our country. No matter where we live in heart we are always INDIANS, and the whole world today recognizes that.We must always endeavor to do better than before wherever we are, and mere that doing only will take our nation even higher and greater. Prime accused in the Parag Das murder case acquitted

Prime accused in the Parag Das murder case, Mridul Phukan, has been acquitted by the District and Sessions Court, Guwahati, citing lack of evidence. As the accused walked out of the court, human rights organisatons, the media faternity, family and friends of Parag Das termed it as a betrayal by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the court. Parag Das, a prominent journalist and human rights defender was gunned down in broad daylight on May 16, 1996. The verdict came after Das's family, friends and civil society organisations sought justice for 13 long years. CBI is the primary investigating agency in the case.

Guwahati citizen team in Halflong

A team of Guwahati citizens has arrived in Halflong today to study the socio-political problems of NC Hills district. During the mission, the team will interact with a varied section of people of the hills district and try to understand the burning issues. The initiative has been taken following a resolution adopted in a citizen meet held at Guwahati Press Club few days back. The team is supposed to carry the message from the trouble-torn district to the greater section in the society. Led by the cultural activist Loknath Goswami, the team includes IPTA worker Jayanta Gogoi, poet Kamal Kumar Medhi with journalists Nava Thakuria, Anup Sharma, Nituparna Rajbongshi and Prasanta Datta.

ULFA rebel killed in Barpeta encounter

A hardcore ULFA rebel was killed at an encounter with police and army in Barpeta district on Thursday. According to information, the encounter took place at Pattacharkuchi on late Thursday night when army and police was running a joint operation in the area. As the operation was on the ULFA rebel started indiscriminate firing at the police and when retaliated by police the miliant was killed on the spot. A pistol was also recovered from his possession.

Border infiltration declining: Govt

There has been a steep in the cases of infiltrating from across the Indo-Bangla border if the government ius to be beleived. According to a home ministry statement, till June this year, 991 foreign infiltrators were held along the Indo-Bangla border while 2559 such persons were apprehended last year. In 2007 and 2006, the figures were 4206 and 5130 respectively. The statement has claimed that the Government has adopted a "multi-pronged approach" to contain cross-border infiltration which includes round the clock surveillance and patrolling on the borders and establishment of observation posts. Arunachal Pradesh clears gas pipeline to Assam

The Arunachal Pradesh government has cleared its signal to Oil India Limited for laying a 60 km pipeline to carry gas from Changlang district to Assam. According to Assam, the pipeline will run from Kumchai in Changlang district to Doomduma in Tinsukia district of Assam via Namsai and Mahadevpur. The decision was taken on Thursday followed by a meeting between an OIL team led by General Manager (production) I Bharali and Arunachal Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu. Around 50,000 cubic metre of gas gets wasted every day for want of a pipeline. And once the pipeline is constructed, the border state would also earn revenue. Encounter in Nagaon: 1 arrested, 2 injured

A dreaded ULFA cadre was captured, two others seriously injured at an encounter with police in Nagaon district on Thursday. According to information, the encounter took place at around 1 in the afternoon in the area at Moukhuti in Deodhar in Nagaon district. The grievously injured rebels have been identified as Razeq Hussain and Imran Hussain. The arrested ULFA cadre has been identified as Chandan Hazarika.

46 rhinos poached in Assam since 2006: Ramesh

At least 132 persons were arrested for poaching 46 rhinos in Assam since 2006. This was what the government informed Lok Sabha on Wednesday. Replying to a written question, Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh said nine rhinos were poached in 2006 while 21 and 16 in 2007 and 2008 respectively. He said the estimated population of rhinos in the four different protected areas of Assam was 2,021 of which 2,048 rhinos were found in Kaziranga National Park, followed by Orang National Park, Pobitra Wildlife Sanctuary and five in Manas national Park. Diamond ring in the Guwahati sky

Thousands of skywatchers burst into an applause in several parts of Assam as the crescent sun smiled upon the capital when the eclipse reached its maximum of 100 per cent at 6:26 a.m on Wednesday morning. But in some other places along with Dibrugarh people remained upset due to a cloudy sky where a host of scientists and sky gazers including from abroad were all geared up to conduct experiments in several institutions.
