Inquisitiveness, curiosity n proudness filled me as I got ready to attend the 62nd Independence Day at Indian Embassy,Kuwait. As we drove to the Embassy at 6.30am to reach and be part of the flag hoisting at 7.10am ,my mind was filled with different thoughts…thoughts of the many Indenpence Day we celebrated in our motherland Assam under the shadow of Assam Bandh . My one year daughter too wake up early that day as if she understood the importance of this special day. As we approach’d the embassy my husband park’d our car atleast 1km from the embassy as there was no space as hundreds of cars were already parked. As we came near the embassy we were pleasantly surprised to see hundreds of Indians from different walks of life and some like me with infants. People had Indian Flags in their hands. I felt so happy and proud when my infant daughter too took a flag and was waving. Jai Hind, Jai Bharat, Mera Bharat Mahan echoed in the air. The “Borah Drummers”, the members are Guajarati Muslims exhibited their talent and skills. Small school children and Doctors community sang patriotic songs. The Indian Ambassador Ajai Malhotra hosted the national tri-colour flag as we all stood there with proudness. He read out the Prime Minister of India Dr Manmohan Singh’s message ,the speech which he gave to millions of Indians from the Red Fort .He also read out the various facilities and schemes that the embassy has taken for thousands of Indian workers. After the cultural programme was over ,the Ambassador met the common people and listen to their grievances if any. Deep feeling of proudness enveloped thousands who gathered there to be part of such a celebration. Mughal Mahal, a famous Indian restaurant gave free breakfast (paratha,chola,sweets) to thousands of people who gathered . Free supplements on Independence Day were distributed by The Times(Kuwait’s premier weekly newspaper) and Arab Times(Kuwait’s national daily).
In a foreign country that too in a Middle East Muslim country like Kuwait we celebrated it so much fun, proudness and most importantly without fear, then why not in our motherland Assam??Can’t we be like rest of India and foreign countries in observing our Independence Day???When will such a day come???These thoughts filled my mind as we drove back home.
I remembered Jawaharlal Nehru’s Independence Day speech…. "Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we will redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially. At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance.... We end today a period of ill fortune, and India discovers herself again."
Its time for us, all assamese people to defy the Bandh and celebrate it with love, fun and frolic.

The Ambassador infact read out the President of India's message and not the Prime Minister's. Anyhow thanks to Parimita for sharing her thoughts. We too feel proud like her to be part of the celebrations of our great nation.

Pom-ba, it was a great coverage for us to know about how NRIs feel about their country and Independence. We Indians are actually, patriotic by birth; it is in our subconscious to feel great and own about our country. No matter where we live in heart we are always INDIANS, and the whole world today recognizes that.We must always endeavor to do better than before wherever we are, and mere that doing only will take our nation even higher and greater. Kaziranga National Park is agog with festivity as the 7th elephant festival begins on Monday.The four day long event will be formally inaugurated by forest and tourism minister Rockybul Hussain on Tuesday at a glittering function inside the park.The Kaziranga Marathon will mark the beginning of the festival and this would be followed by the opening of a fair by Panchayat and Rural Development Minister Chandan Brahma.The focus of attention on Tuesday will be a cultural procession. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is scheduled to attend the jumbo festival. Several experts will deliberate on the man-elephant festival in a series of seminars and group discussions.
The Opposition Asom Gana Parishad is gearing up to fight the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. The regional party is all set to clear its list of candidates by February 15.According to party senior leaders, the decision was taken at the first meeting of the party’s election preparation committee held on Friday. The meeting unanimously resolved that the ticket aspirants will send their names to the steering committee after due consultation with the district committees.The party has convened its next sitting on February 14 and the meeting is expected to finalise the list of the candidates.
An ULFA cadre died at an encounter at Sarthebari area in Barpeta district on Friday evening.According to information, the encounter between the ULFA militants and a team of police and CRPF jawans took place at Na-Satra and the militant was identified Trailakya Deka.Acting on some specific inputs of ULFA presence in the area, a team of police and the CRPF jawans was launching an operation where they locked in an encounter with three ULFA rebels.Policman Younis Ali sustained was injured in the encounter. Police and security forces are looking for two other rebels who managed to flee from the spot.
A crucial AGP steering committee meeting has failed to clear its poll deal with BJP on a few vital seats. The meeting convened at the party headquarters on Thursday remained inconclusive as the seat sharing deal was not discussed in detail in view of some party obligation. The meeting would be convened again in a day or two to take a decision.In yet another development, the third front leaders comprising AUDF, CPI, CPM and NCP also failed to strike a deal for the upcoming Lok Sabha poll. The Third Front has already cleared deal for 8 seats. The meeting on Thursday evening remained inconclusive and would hold again on February 10.
There is report of a crackdown by Bangladesh security agencies on Indian insurgent camps.According to information, Bangladesh security agencies had raided camps of the Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL) and United National Liberation Front (UNLF) located at the Chittagong Hill Tracts a few weeks ago. These revelations have come up during interrogation of the People's Liberation Army militants arrested recently.Sources say a few years ago the PLA had about 15,00 cadre in the Khoya camp in the CHT, but their number has been reduced to 50 now. The Asom gana parishad leaders are holding a steering body meeting on Thursday to finalise the fate of the prestigious Guwahati Lok Sabha seat. According to the senior party leaders, they would have to take a decision on the seat and contradicted the report that they have already handed over the Guwahati seat to the BJP. Caught in a barrage of controversy Assam state Chief election officer has put in his papers and joined the Congress on Sunday.According to information, C K Sarma who has been working as the state's chief election officer is seeking Congress ticket for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. He already talked to a few party leaders of the APCC. An uneasy situation is escalating in upper Assam's Sivasagar district after an innocent youth was killed while police, army and security forces locked at an encounte with ULFA at Charaideo on Thursday afternoon.Local residents have alleged that army killed a tea garden labourer Monglu Tati, a tea garden labourer in the encounter and have claimed him to be a hardcore ULFA militant. Assam truck owners may go on an indefinite strike, if the Meghalaya Government fails to curb 'illegal check gates' in the State.In a memorandum to Meghalaya Chief Minister, the Goalpara District Truck Owners Association said despite repeated requests, the government has not taken any to abolish the unauthorised check gates, pollution testing centres and weigh bridges on NH-62.They further gave a list of such illegal check gates in the Garo Hills region of Meghalaya and threatened to call for an indefinite 'chakka bandh' if the Mehalaya Government failed once again to take action against them.
