Independence Day in Kuwait

Inquisitiveness, curiosity n proudness filled me as I got ready to attend the 62nd Independence Day at Indian Embassy,Kuwait. As we drove to the Embassy at 6.30am to reach and be part of the flag hoisting at 7.10am ,my mind was filled with different thoughts…thoughts of the many Indenpence Day we celebrated in our motherland Assam under the shadow of Assam Bandh . My one year daughter too wake up early that day as if she understood the importance of this special day. As we approach’d the embassy my husband park’d our car atleast 1km from the embassy as there was no space as hundreds of cars were already parked. As we came near the embassy we were pleasantly surprised to see hundreds of Indians from different walks of life and some like me with infants. People had Indian Flags in their hands. I felt so happy and proud when my infant daughter too took a flag and was waving. Jai Hind, Jai Bharat, Mera Bharat Mahan echoed in the air. The “Borah Drummers”, the members are Guajarati Muslims exhibited their talent and skills. Small school children and Doctors community sang patriotic songs. The Indian Ambassador Ajai Malhotra hosted the national tri-colour flag as we all stood there with proudness. He read out the Prime Minister of India Dr Manmohan Singh’s message ,the speech which he gave to millions of Indians from the Red Fort .He also read out the various facilities and schemes that the embassy has taken for thousands of Indian workers. After the cultural programme was over ,the Ambassador met the common people and listen to their grievances if any. Deep feeling of proudness enveloped thousands who gathered there to be part of such a celebration. Mughal Mahal, a famous Indian restaurant gave free breakfast (paratha,chola,sweets) to thousands of people who gathered . Free supplements on Independence Day were distributed by The Times(Kuwait’s premier weekly newspaper) and Arab Times(Kuwait’s national daily).


In a foreign country that too in a Middle East Muslim country like Kuwait we celebrated it so much fun, proudness and most importantly without fear, then why not in our motherland Assam??Can’t we be like rest of India and foreign countries in observing our Independence Day???When will such a day come???These thoughts filled my mind as we drove back home.


I remembered Jawaharlal Nehru’s Independence Day speech…. "Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we will redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially. At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance.... We end today a period of ill fortune, and India discovers herself again."


Its time for us, all assamese people to defy the Bandh and celebrate it with love, fun and frolic.

The Ambassador infact read out the President of India's message and not the Prime Minister's. Anyhow thanks to Parimita for sharing her thoughts. We too feel proud like her to be part of the celebrations of our great nation.

Pom-ba, it was a great coverage for us to know about how NRIs feel about their country and Independence. We Indians are actually, patriotic by birth; it is in our subconscious to feel great and own about our country. No matter where we live in heart we are always INDIANS, and the whole world today recognizes that.We must always endeavor to do better than before wherever we are, and mere that doing only will take our nation even higher and greater. 3 KLNLF cadres killed in Karbi Anglong

Three KLNLF cadres were killed in three separate encounters with army in Bokolialghat in Karbi Anglong district on Wednesday. GJM-ABVP activists clash in Jalpaiguri

There is report of simmering tension in Jalpaiguri district early on Tuesday morning as supporters of Gorkha Janamukti Morcha and anti-Gorkhaland group clashed with the Akhil Bhartiya Adivasi Vikas Parishad (ABAVP) activists. According to information, the incident took place after GJM supporters raided and ransacked the house of a ABAVP leader, John Barla, in Lalkipara tea estate area.Irked by the ransacking of their leader's house, ABAVP activists torched three houses of GJM supporters in the area.

Bomb recovered near Guwahati hospital

A major tragedy has been averted in Guwahati on Tuesday morning when police recovered a powerful bomb at Fancy Bazar area. According to informaiton, the bomb was fopund at around 11.00 in the morning beside the Mohendra Mohan Chaudhury Hospital. Seniot police officials rushed to the spot. Details awaited.

Smuggled cattled seized in Dhubri

Troops fired at a gang of smugglers and seized 64 cattle at Bogdor in Dhubri ealy in the morning on Monday. In yet another incident, Border Security Force jawans posted along the Indo-Bangla border in Meghalaya have siezed more than ten kilogram ganja from Borsora area on Monday night.

Citizen’s Meet on Public Participation in the Counter Terrorism Actions

Journalist’s Forum , Assam has organized a Citizen’s Meet to discuss the security aspects of general populace in India , more precisely in Assam , in the aftermath of the last terror attacks carried out by the terrorists.The virtual capital of Northeast, Guwahati has been targeted three times since October 30 by the terrorists and it is apprehended that the situation may aggravate as the Republic Day (Jan 26) is approaching. We have not used B'desh soil: Rajkhowa

The United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) on Monday has made it clear that none of its top leaders have been using the soil of Bangladesh as its base. In a statement ULFA president Arabinda Rajkhowa said it’s a conspiracy to malign their image. Rajkhowa said there is no question of using the soil of Bangladesh while they are continuing the struggle for an end to the colonial rule of new Delhi. He alleged that the government has ignored any steps for a dignified political settlement of the conflict.He further alleged that the government has been blaming it all on the ULFA after successfully making a series of explosions in public place.

Police ready to take on ULFA before R-Day

Operations against ULFA rebels gets intensified throughout the state with a few days left for Republic Day. According to information, police have some inputs that the banned outfit have smuggled consignments of arms and ammunition into Assam to foment more trouble in the run-up to the Republic Day.Director General of Police G.M. Srivastava said huge quantities of arms and ammunition recently seized from upper Assam's Tinsukia district and that these had been procured by ULFA's 28th battalion and did not belong to the battalion's 'a' and 'c' company whose cadres are currently on an unilateral ceasefire.He said most of the weapons were of Chinese make but a probe is on to determine the route...

Arms and ammo recovered in Karbi Anglong

Assam is going to be a safe haven for rebels. These rebels were planning a major strike with arms and ammunition.Army's Red Horn division has recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition from Belaghat in Karbi Anglong district on Monday morning. According to information, these include 500 gram of explosive materials, 255 detonators, 337 ammunition of AK series rifles, 163 ammunition of 9mm and 95 ammunition of 7.62 rifles.
