Independence Day in Kuwait

Inquisitiveness, curiosity n proudness filled me as I got ready to attend the 62nd Independence Day at Indian Embassy,Kuwait. As we drove to the Embassy at 6.30am to reach and be part of the flag hoisting at 7.10am ,my mind was filled with different thoughts…thoughts of the many Indenpence Day we celebrated in our motherland Assam under the shadow of Assam Bandh . My one year daughter too wake up early that day as if she understood the importance of this special day. As we approach’d the embassy my husband park’d our car atleast 1km from the embassy as there was no space as hundreds of cars were already parked. As we came near the embassy we were pleasantly surprised to see hundreds of Indians from different walks of life and some like me with infants. People had Indian Flags in their hands. I felt so happy and proud when my infant daughter too took a flag and was waving. Jai Hind, Jai Bharat, Mera Bharat Mahan echoed in the air. The “Borah Drummers”, the members are Guajarati Muslims exhibited their talent and skills. Small school children and Doctors community sang patriotic songs. The Indian Ambassador Ajai Malhotra hosted the national tri-colour flag as we all stood there with proudness. He read out the Prime Minister of India Dr Manmohan Singh’s message ,the speech which he gave to millions of Indians from the Red Fort .He also read out the various facilities and schemes that the embassy has taken for thousands of Indian workers. After the cultural programme was over ,the Ambassador met the common people and listen to their grievances if any. Deep feeling of proudness enveloped thousands who gathered there to be part of such a celebration. Mughal Mahal, a famous Indian restaurant gave free breakfast (paratha,chola,sweets) to thousands of people who gathered . Free supplements on Independence Day were distributed by The Times(Kuwait’s premier weekly newspaper) and Arab Times(Kuwait’s national daily).


In a foreign country that too in a Middle East Muslim country like Kuwait we celebrated it so much fun, proudness and most importantly without fear, then why not in our motherland Assam??Can’t we be like rest of India and foreign countries in observing our Independence Day???When will such a day come???These thoughts filled my mind as we drove back home.


I remembered Jawaharlal Nehru’s Independence Day speech…. "Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we will redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially. At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance.... We end today a period of ill fortune, and India discovers herself again."


Its time for us, all assamese people to defy the Bandh and celebrate it with love, fun and frolic.

The Ambassador infact read out the President of India's message and not the Prime Minister's. Anyhow thanks to Parimita for sharing her thoughts. We too feel proud like her to be part of the celebrations of our great nation.

Pom-ba, it was a great coverage for us to know about how NRIs feel about their country and Independence. We Indians are actually, patriotic by birth; it is in our subconscious to feel great and own about our country. No matter where we live in heart we are always INDIANS, and the whole world today recognizes that.We must always endeavor to do better than before wherever we are, and mere that doing only will take our nation even higher and greater. Bandh disrupts normal life in Sivasagar

Normal life in Sivasagar district has been thrown out of gear as the entire upper Assam distirct slips into a total bandh from Saturday morning.The 12 hour total bandh is being called by All Tai Ahom Students Union in protest against the death of its Sivasagar district vice president in police custody.Barring the vehicles of security forces there are no vehicles are seen plying on the streets. Blast at Maligaon: 2 dead

Two persons died and a few others have been injured when a powerful blast rocked the city again on Friday evening. According to information, the incident took place at Maligaon near the railway gate and it was planted at bicycle in between two cars. The deceased have yet to be identified. Police have rushed to the spot.Police say it a handiwork of ULFA who have been unleashing a reign of terror in the city right from the new year's day. City petrol crisis ending

The petrol crisis in the north eastern city of Guwahati is expected to die down by Friday evening.According to Kamrup district administration sources steps are on to rush petrol and disel to the city petrol depots that have gone dry from Friday morning as an impact of the three day indefinite strike by the oil PSU executives.

Assam petrol pumps go dry

Assam also feels the heat of the statewide strike by the oil PSU officers as the petrol pumps across the state are running dry from early in the morning on Friday. Most of the petrol pumps are are remaining closed due to non availability of petrol. The scene is palpable in the north eastern city of Guwahati where vehicles are lining up in front of a few petrol pumps. But of no avail. Assam wants ULFA Secy Chetia back from B'desh

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gagoi has asked the Centre to take immediate necessary measures for extradition of the banned outfit's general secretary Anup Chetia.Quoting Gogoi as saying agencies said the state government has asked the Central government to take urgent steps for the extradition of Anup Chetia.According to the Chief Minister said with a new friendly government, led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, assuming power in Bangladesh, Dhaka would extradite all Indian fugitives taking shelter in the neighbouring country.After expiry of the jail term, Chetia sought political asylum in Bangladesh, which the government turned down. City serial blast mastermind killed

There is report that ULFA cadre Pranjal Deka alias Biju Sarania, the brain behind the serial blasts in Guwahati on the new year’s day was killed. According to information, he was killed during an encounter with police and army at Halikuchi area in Rongiya on Thursday evening.Acting on specific inputs, Nalbari police led by SP Jitmol Doley with army launched a joint operation in the area where the encounter took place in the evening. The deceased ULFA cadre was identified as Pranjal Deka..the the main culprit who struck in the city with a string of blast on the new year’s day. His fellow cadres managed to escape.

Case against Sarupathar OC

Sarupathar police station has registered a case against its officer in charge Ruhindranath Changmai on Tuesday. According to an FIR moved by the Golaghat Chambers of Commerce, the police officer has been unleashing a reign of terror among the section of businessmen for thge last few months.

Centre extends ceasefire with NDFB for 6 months

The Centre has extended its ceasefore with the National Democratic Front of Bodoland for another period of six years. Confirming this Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi iad in Delhi that the decision was finalised at a top level meeting taking in to account all the inputs it received from several quarters. The term for ceasefire with the Bodo militant outfit expired on December 31.

Decision on NDFB ceasefire soon

The Centre is apparently finding it difficult to take a decision on extension of ceasefire with NDFB with the banned outfit is suspected to be behind the October serial blasts in Assam.The Suspension of Operations lapsed on December, 31, 2008 and even after a few rounds of talks among Home Ministry, the Assam government and NDFB, no decision has been taken so far on extending the agreement.The Centre hopes that the Union home ministry will be able to come to an arrangement and a decision will be taken very quickly. He said any such truce should followed strictly and this should be ensured.
