A political storm has erupted in Nazira following Congress MLA A.K. Rashid Alam’s alleged use of unparliamentary language against senior journalist and ND24 Editor-in-Chief Rajdeep Bailung Baruah during a live television program. The incident has drawn sharp condemnation from local journalist bodies, who have demanded immediate action. In a strong joint response, the Nazira Press Club and Nazira Hangabadik Mancha have termed the MLA’s behavior as "uncivilized, unacceptable, and a direct attack on the freedom of the press." Bhashkar Jyoti Borgohain, President of the Nazira Press Club, issued a statement demanding that the Congress party initiate disciplinary proceedings against the...
It began as a quiet but determined effort—an internal push to redefine what a paramilitary force could achieve beyond security duty. Today, it has become a historic chapter in Indian sports. In the year 2024–25, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) shattered all previous records, collecting a stunning 159 medals across international, national, and All India Police sports events. The scale of this achievement is more than just numbers—it signals the rise of a new contender in India’s sporting narrative. One of the most powerful moments came recently in Birmingham, USA, at the World Police and Fire Games 2025, where CISF athletes stunned spectators by winning 66 medals,...
The Communist Party of India (CPI) has strongly condemned the ongoing eviction drives in Assam, calling them "inhumane and arbitrary", and demanded their immediate halt. Speaking at a press conference in Nazira, CPI State Secretary Kanak Gogoi lashed out at the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government, accusing it of violating Supreme Court guidelines and failing to provide adequate rehabilitation to displaced families. “Eviction without rehabilitation is inhumane” Gogoi asserted that eviction operations are being carried out without due process and reflect the government's pro-corporate agenda. “Offering 1.5 kathas of land and ₹50,000 is a smokescreen. The real aim is to transfer land to...
In a dramatic turn of events following the Indian Army’s drone and missile strikes on ULFA (Independent) camps in Myanmar, the militant outfit has now claimed that Prodip Axom, earlier reported dead, has survived and been rescued. The strikes, which reportedly killed senior ULFA-I members including Ganesh Axom and initially, Prodip Axom, had sent shockwaves through their hometown of Hauphau village in Charaideo district. The latest statement from ULFA-I has brought a wave of relief to Prodip’s family. His younger brother, speaking from their home under Sonari Police Station, has appealed to Prodip to return home safely and reunite with the family. This follows earlier reports of...

The slow construction of the RCC culvert on B.G. Road at the junction of Changmai and Gohain villages in Singhadwar, Hanhchara of Sivasagar district, has disrupted the daily life of the public and caused immense inconvenience. The temporary diversion road constructed alongside is also slippery and uneven, making it very difficult for vehicles and pedestrians to navigate during rainfall. The B.G. Road, also known as the Sivasagar-Nazira Road, is one of the busiest roads in Sivasagar district, with thousands of vehicles plying on it daily. However, the administration and the Public Works Department seem to be indifferent to the issue. Despite the ongoing construction work under the Assam...
In response to the recent spate of attacks on working journalists in Assam, the Nazira Hangabadik Mancha has submitted a memorandum to the Home Minister of Assam through the Co-District Commissioner (CDC) of Nazira, calling for a thorough investigation and justice for the victims. The memorandum comes in the wake of disturbing incidents where journalists from two satellite news channels—ND24 and PRAG NEWS—were reportedly assaulted while on duty. Bimaljyoti Nath, ND24’s correspondent from Dekiajuli, and Madhurya Saikia, PRAG NEWS’s Dhemaji correspondent from Silapathar, were targeted by unidentified miscreants in separate incidents, raising serious concerns over press freedom and the...
In a glaring example of development failure, several families residing in Ward No. 9 of Borguri village panchayat, under Sapekhati mouza in the Sonari Assembly constituency of Charaideo district, continue to live without electricity. The area, located near the Assam–Arunachal Pradesh border, remains in darkness despite repeated complaints and the state government's promise of universal household electrification. While the Assam government has consistently claimed that electricity connections have been extended to all rural households under its flagship schemes, the ground reality in Borguri tells a different story. Dozens of families still await basic power supply, which affects not just...
The condition of Nazira’s roads, especially the historic Dhodar Ali, paints a grim picture of neglect and governmental indifference. Once a vital arterial road with historical and economic significance, Dhodar Ali is now in a state of disrepair, causing immense hardship to commuters and residents alike. Despite being a region blessed with abundant natural resources—such as coal, oil, and stone—and housing major public sector institutions like ONGC, Nazira has seen little in terms of real infrastructural development. The promises made by elected representatives and departmental officials have failed to materialize, leading to growing frustration among the public. Repeated protests and...
Nazira, June 27, 2025: The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) has achieved a significant milestone by successfully capping Well RDS#147A, effectively resolving a gas leak that began during service operations on June 12, 2025.
