Call for Papers: Multi-Ethnic Poetry in English from North-East India: A Critical Spectrum

The term ‘North-East’ is a form of geographical, linguistic and ethnic stereotyping that clubs together eight disparate states comprising of Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Manipur, Mizoram, and Sikkim, that happen to lie in the Northeastern periphery of the Indian union. The body of works by English-language writers from this regionrefers to the North-East Indian Writings in English. Some of the most interesting Indian writing in English today is coming from this region. Intense political conflict and complex issues of identity along with some of the psychological and social perplexities of the present provide much fodder for storylines. And the subsoil of myth and folklore, coupled with scenic landscapes, make it a fertile ground for literary ferment.


Today, there is a profusion of literature from the North-East India. Of this resourceful group, the poets have always commanded a special attention and appeal owing to the ubiquity of the form and the profound intensity of the creative expression. The sense of place, history and society comes across through their poems beautifully and in very evocative language. Mostly, they hail from the multifarious ethnic groups. Obviously, ethnicity is a major concern in their poetry.


The proposed anthology is intended to focus on some of the latest perspectives of the region presented by noted North-East Indian poets such as Temsula Ao, Mamang Dai, Easterine Iralu, Tiamerenla Monalisa Changkija, Nini Vingurian Lungalang, Esther Syiem, Mona Zote, Kynpham Sing Nongkynrih, Robin Singh Ngangom, Desmond L. Kharmawphlang, Anjum Hasan, Bhaskar Roy Barman, Arbind Kumar Choudhary, Rajendra Bhandari, Niranjan Chakma, Jogamaya Chakma, Nabanita Kanungo, Yumlam Tana, Mrs. Lakshahira Das, Dayananda Pathak, Umakanta Sarma, Bhupati Das, R. K. Madhubir, Ananya S. Guha, H. Ramdinthari, Rajendra Bhandari, Chandra Kanta Murasingh, Kalyan Brata Chakraborty, Nanda Kumar Debbarma, Swapan Sengupta, Shefali Debbarma, Niranjan Chakma Yogmaya Chakma, Ganghini Sorokkhaibam, Sudhanwa Tripura, etc. etc.


Interested scholars are requested to submit a 200-250 words abstract along with short bio through e-mail as MS Word attachment to Dr. Indu Swami at induswamionline@yahoo.com latest by July 31, 2011. The deadline for submission of full length unpublished quality papers (3000-7000 words) in the latest MLA style is August 31, 2011. The anthology will be published by a renowned International Publisher with ISBN in the month of December 2011.

3 NDFB rebels arrested

Security forces arrested three hardcore NDFB rebels on Sunday and seized explosives and arms from thier possession. They were apprehended in a crackdown against the outfit in the state and Nagaland. According to sources, NDFB rebel Sugan Damiary alias Thelka was arrested at Rowta in Udalguri district by the army and a pistol and 500gm of explosives were recovered from him. Acting on a tip off, received from him, the army launched an operation in Rangiya town where two other NDFB cadres Sunil Bora and Ramoni Boro were held. BJP to launch massive agitation against big dams

Assam BJP will take out a massive agitation in December to stop mega dams' construction works in Arunachal Pradesh. Addressing a press conference in Guwahati on Sunday, BJP state president, Ranjit Dutta said these dams will have adverse impact in the downstream areas of Assam. He alleged that Dispur was all out to support the dams. "We are dead opposed to these construction of big dams in Arunachal Pradesh and therefore have decided to launch an intesified agitation throughout the state. 3 killed in Rongia police firing

There is report of simmering tension at Rongia in the outskirt of Guwahati a day after 3 killed and several others injured in police firing at a group clash on Friday. According to information, the incident took place as security forces opened fire to control an irrate mob of the All Bodoland Minority Students’ Union who allegedly vandalized a number of business establishments on the Rangiya-Bhutan road at Rangiya Tiniali. The Mumbai Asomiya Sarvajanin Durga Puja Samitee has celebrated the fifth consecutive Durga Puja since its establishment in 2006. NDFB Cadre killed in encounter

A hardcore NDFB cadre was killed at an encounter with security forces in Sonitpur district on Sarturday evening. The encounter took place at around 7 in the evening at Bhorajuli area under Bihali police station along Assam Arunachal Pradesh border. The encounter is still going on. Notably, 2 ULFA militants were killed in an encounter with security forces in Kokrajhar district in the wee hours on Saturday. Acting on a tip-off, a joint team of army and police launched a massive operation at Patoliguri area near Gosaigaon along the Assam-Bengal border, where a group of militants opened fire on the security forces and bullets were exchanged.

3 killed in Nagaon accident

Altogether 3 persons were killed and 15 others seriously injured in a road accident in Nagaon district on Saturday. The accident took place at Dimou Chariali near Nagaon town the wee hours when a truck and a mini-bus collided killing the three on the spot. Despite restriction, a truck, breaching the orders, attempted to overcome the police squad and had a head-on collision with another vehicle coming from the opposite side.

Rainwaters mar Durga Puja in Guwahati

A heavy downpour in Guwahati seemed to have marred the Durga Puja festivity on Saturday. Parts of the city have come under floodwaters following incessant rain that lashed the city for nearly two hours. Much to the utter disappointment of the pendal hoopers, a good number of puja pendals have come under rain waters in Lachit Nagar, Nabin Nagar, Chandmari, Zoo Road, Ganeshguri. Moreover, the rain waters have flooded parts of the GS Road causing much inconvenience for the people from Saturday morming.

CNN-IBN award for Akhil Gogoi

The CNN-IBN has selected Assam's noted RTI activist Akhil Gogoi as one of the top ten young leader of the country. This was confirmed by the KMSS leader on Friday in Guwahati. The country's premier satellite news channel has also selected 9 other top young leaders. Gogoi has been waging war against largescale corruptions that cripple the public life for the last several years. He has been leading the farmers' body (KMSS) who of late, dropped a bomb shell against Assam health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma alleging his nexus with R H Khan where a huge amount of fund meant for Dima Hasao district was siphoned off.
