Guwahati: In yet another ‘handiwork,’ ULFA explodes a powerful bomb in the busy Machkhowa areas on Saturday morning at around 7-30 which left four people dead and more than twenty injured.
The blast that rocks again in the time of the grand Ambubachi mela atop Kamakhya and Asian Athletic Grand Prix at Sarusajai, took place in front of a mosque. All those four were killed on the spot.
The bomb was placed beside a small tea stall at the daily fruit and vegetable market. Most of the vendors and visitors were not present in the morning when the bomb exploded.
The injured people have been admitted to the nearby hospital for treatment by the people who rushed to the spot hearing the huge sound the blast made. The conditions of four of these people are critical.
Immediately after the incident, police and top ranked police and civil officials including the Deputy Commissioner Abinash Joshi arrived in the spot and started investigation. Later talking to the reporters on the spot, Mr Joshi says the blast is a handiwork of ULFA.
Meanwhile, the city police beefs up security arrangement in view of the grand fair and festival at the Kahakhya temple and also to ensure security to the athletes across the Asian countries in view of the 16th Asian Grand Prix. The event is inaugurated on Saturday by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.
Panic spreads among those who gatecrash the Kamakhya temple premises to participate in the on going Ambubashi fair. These people have arrived in the fair spot from the last week.

How can A. Joshi imediately blame ULFA without proper investigation.
This is second blast in Muslim area within weeks.
The last week was - The explosion took place at a predominantly Muslim area in village Gulutuk in Kamrup district, 50 km from Guwahati.
The Guluktuk blast - "The blast was carried out at the behest of the RSS and was executed by the organisation's youth wing with Abhijit Sarma as the kingpin," ULFA spokesman Raju Baruah said in a statement received by IANS. "Sarma is a member of RSS's youth wing," the statement said. How can a place which is 100% Muslim - a bomb blast ? This is the main question which the local people's should think.
Three peope have been injured while a powerful blast rocked a vegetable market in Nalbari. The explosion took place at 6in the evening. The injure peopes have been rushed to the hospital. They are Nalini Kalita, Rabindra Sarma and Biswajit Debnath. On the other hand, two hardcore ULFA cadres died at an encounter with army at the Dibru Saikhowa sanctuary. The encounter reportedly going on and the army jawans are cordoning off the entire area.
The Union home ministry has sent a slew of instructions for the north eastern states to deal with any situation during the Republic Day celebrations in the region. With less than 24 hours left for the Republic Day, security has been beefed up across the state to ensure peace and normalcy during the day. Besides intensifying patrolling on the streets, police and para military troops have been deployed at the vital bridges, railway stations along with oil and gas installations apprehending militant strikes. The Bongaigaon police have recovered some explosive materials inside a bag from a bus which was on its way to Bongaigaon from Barpeta in the morning.According to information, the bag was recovered from the bus bearing No AMB 2081 during a routine check at the Chapaguri Road at around 10-35 in the morning on Friday. The bag was taken away to a safer place. Later police said the bag contained some detonators, 200 gelatin sticks, some clothes and medicines. Despite drizzling in January Coldwave, around seventy five per cent voters exercised their franchise in the fourth and final phase of panchayat polling in Darrang district on Thursday. NABARD has planned to invest a total Rs 2224.63 crore for 2008-2009 in Assam. Addressing a seminar held on Thursday at the Assam Administrative Staff College, the banks’s chief general manager C K Gopalakrishna said of this amount, the potential assessed for agriculture is Rs 886.38 crore , Rs 441.05 crore for industries while Rs 897.19 crore is being kept for services. He said in view of the thrust on agriculture and food processing industries, a credit potential of Rs 35.23 crore has been estimated for the year. The Black Widow has killed one Amri Rupsi in Haflong on Thursday morning alleging him to be a police informer. According to information, the publicity secretary of the outfit Phaisang Dimasa came to Rupsi at around 7 in the morning and took him away to the street and shot dead from a close range saying him to be a police informer. Amid tight security, Assam is going to the fourth and final phase of the panchayat elections in Darrang district from in the morning on Thursday. The polling is going on at 728 voting centers in the district. As many as 4,50,000 voters are voting for 3659 candidates. The voting will end at 4.00 pm. Around 70 per cent of the voters had exercised their franchise in the first phase of the polls on December 31, while around 72 per cent cast their votes in the second phase on January 4. An estimated 74 per cent of the electorate had exercised their franchise in the third phase of polling on January 9.
