Victor Banerjee calls for harmony through Sankardeva’s message
Terming the 15th century great Assamese saint Srimanta Sankardeva as a global citizen renowned actor Victor Banerjee said that relevance of his messages has increased at the present scenario across the globe. The 67 year old versatile actor who is the ambassador of Srimanta Sankardeva Movement meant for the promotion of the lessons of the saint nation-wide also urged upon the parents to teach his lessons to their kids.
“Sankardeva was an eminent personality of the globe and the most extra-ordinary figure of the Indian sub-continent. He rose above the caste, creed, religion or anything and created a platform for humanity and he was the first ever person in this part of the globe to think of community centres in the form of Namghars (Vaishnavite monastery) several centuries back. At the present hour, he is most relevant not just in India but globally as well,” said Banerjee who has spent his childhood in Assam addressing a press conference at Guwahati Press Club on Tuesday.
Trend MMS, a cultural trust of Assam who is organizing a special event – Bengaluru Initiative for the promotion of Sankardeva’s messages for the people of the rest of the country and abroad. Bengaluru initiative is the second edition of the movement as they have already organized such an event in New Delhi last year.
“It is very important for me to come over here for this cause. This is one of the major cultural movements in the entire country. 100 years from now, none of us will be alive but Sankardeva and his messages will find place in human heart. It is the art and culture which survive the ages,” he added.
The chief organizer of the event Shyamkanu Mahanta said that Sarod maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan would offer a special tribute to the saint on the event which is scheduled to take place on June 1st this year at Chowdiah Memorial Hall in Bangalore.
“We hope that our initiative will help to bring a positive atmosphere to the state and the country as well by the message of peace and harmony,” Mahanata said. Besides others, some of the Assamese people residing in Bangalore like Olee Bora and Yuganta Saikia have been instrumental in organizing the event.

The need for a tea auction centre at a prime tea producing area like Jorhat was raised at a seminar in the ongoing Assam International Trade and Industrial Fair on Monday.The issue was raised by Manoj Jallan, former Chairman of NETA at a technical session on tea at one of the fair’s seminar hall.
